The place I work I have observed people do various things in office, such as going to the gym to workout (while during the day) and playing games on their cell phone, and even studying for the CPA exam in office. So I thought it was okay to study for the CPA exam in office. Turns out that was not correct. So someone reported this to my manager and my manager gave me an indefinite written warning. Fast forward a few months. I was casually chatting with my manager and this topic came up and my manager gave away a piece of information that basically after that I knew who it was that reported me. And I think it was kind of hypocritical of that person to report me because that person has also studied for the CPA exam in office. I am just wondering, should I report this person? Should I leave this company? The reason I don’t want to report this person is because I don’t want to cause any office drama. And I think it would be rather difficult to transfer to another area in this company with something like this on my record. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Is the hypocrite who ratted you out still studying for the CPA exam during company time? If so, I'd consider mentioning it to my manager. Turn about is fair play after all.

But, more importantly, I'd be looking to get out of that department or to a new company altogether. Giving you a permanent mark in your file is kind of a crappy thing to do in my opinion. If that was a first offense, the manager should have pulled you aside and simply told you to watch yourself while on company time and let you know what is and is not acceptable. Since that didn't happen and it went into your permanent file, that either means that this wasn't your first offense or it's a pretty intolerant place to work. Either way I'd be looking to get out and get a fresh start somewhere else.

    Just my opinion though.

    @ Angelwatch

The other person is a CPA now. It was the first time my manager talked to me about it. Then my manager went to human resources and then came up with the warning.

Ummmm, yeah… Time to dust off the resume. If they're not going to give you a warning for a first offense, it's time to look elsewhere.

My plan is to try to finish the CPA exam first beforehand. Also, there is this slight inconvenience because the company I hope to end up actually owns the company I work for now, and so they have access to my file. By the way, I requested internet access to mirror that of the other person who was studying for the CPA exam (cause I noticed he has access to a lot of sites), and my manager granted such access (your manager have to fill out a form for it).

One last question. My manager offered to modify the wording of the warning (currently it leaves out that I offered an explanation) cause I did say that it left a lot of stuff out, but my manager also said that you do not want to draw attention to this area and too much activity is bad for you. Should I accept that proposition? Also, I am just wondering, would it help if I talk to my director?
