Hey guys, I don’t know why I waited this long, but I just tried to register for REG and the latest date they have is August 8th. Now way I can take it then because I’ve only just started studying for it. Are there a lot of cancelations towards the end of the quarter that opens up space? I figured I’ll study with the aim of taking it late August and hopefully a slot opens up.

Infact the oppostie is true… Its the last month before the blackout month, so many candidates will want to sign up. Keep trying though, you never know.

Are there multiple locations near you that you can go to do testing?

I usually go to one that's pretty close to where I live, but sometimes that one is full and I will sign up at a location that's about 25-30 min away from me.

I see, thanks for the insight. I guess I'll just shoot for end of August and hopefully something opens up. Otherwise early October.

Yeah, I checked 5 locations in the NYC area and somehow all of them had August 8th as last available date.

From what I hear at the office, the registered tax preparer exam given by the IRS is at Prometric, too. There are a ton of tax preparers that need to get that in before the end of the year. I bet that's causing some of the congestion at prometric.

Is it possible that your nts expires on August 8th? you may want to check that if you are seeing every location with nothing available after that date.

Oh good point. Indeed it does expire on 8/8!

Crap, I have 2 weeks and am only half way through Becker's chapter 1. Maybe the best thing is to skip the lectures and just read the 10 page summaries of each chapter before diving into the problems.

Maybe you could call and see if they can extend your nts any. I don't know if it's possible but always worth a shot. I am studying for reg also and at this point, I don't think you could make it if you watch the lectures. You need to start working tons of mcq's if you plan on taking it on the 8th.

I just called NTS and they said what I can do is wait until it expires on 8/8, then apply for re-examination soon after that. I guess I'd have to eat the original exam fee and risk availability towards the end of the quarter. Maybe the best thing to do is wait a couple of weeks and see if my cramming leaves me half ready. If I don't have more than a 10% chance of passing I'll just let it expire and reapply right away.

Guess it doesn't hurt to sit for it anyway, right? You've already paid to take it so you might as well give it a try. If anything you'll get the experience of taking it…of course that does make it so you can't take it at the end of the quarter! 🙂

You're right it doesn't really hurt to sit for it early; it's a sunk cost. Just went over chapter 1 or 7, so I give myself a minute chance of hitting a 75. But the sense of urgency should push things along a little.

@Wrister: How did it end up going for you? I”m taking my first exam on the 31st and am quite nervous!

I got a 73. How did you find it @soccersam_27? I'm gutted, but I had no business passing after only 2 weeks of studying. It was time enough for me to go over all 7 sections of the Becker lectures. Then I got 3 and a half sections of problems attempted (not the supplementary). So I didn't get to touch the Business Law problems. That said I did relatively better in business law. Maybe I got lucky and 73 was an overachievement. So I'm not going to take the retake lightly, hopefully. There was so much to memorize in REG and since it was all short-term for me I'm sure I've forgotten everything by now.

A 73 is still awesome for two weeks of studying, I'd say!! It was at least worth the experience. I'm with everyone while waiting for the score release after taking REG on the 31st. I really don't think I passed. MCQ's were ok, but sims got me, I think. They just have to ask questions just enough to make me second guess myself!!

Overall I'm glad to have the experience under my belt. I'll (hopefully) be a lot less nervous going into my other exams (hopefully I'll only have three left!). It didn't really seem like there was a whole lot of business law on my exam…I don't know if that'll help me or hurt me!!
