I lack ALL types of motivation. I started studying for AUD, lasted about 4 weeks, quit and I have not looked back. (Mind you this is my second time sitting for the exam.)

Does anyone have some kind words to offer to move me to action?

Staying motivated and studying when there are other things to do is, at least, half the battle! I am currently struggling to get into studying BEC. I think the only way to overcome loss of motivation is just to start studying. Also, I have all my tests scheduled and that is keeping me on my toes a bit.

Even when you actually passed some parts (FAR & AUD) after a few tries, you still feel drained. This exam is ideal for someone who just finished college, but for the rest of us, it is just too much info to handle.

Depends on how bad you want the CPA.

Those who wants it badly will do whatever is necessary to pass no matter how many Fails.

And those who don't or lack the motivation will continue to be test takers only until they break out of it or find that motivation again.

Thanks for the support (fro those who offered support). Scheduling an exam sounds like a good idea to keep me on track.

My major issue is that I would rather spend my time with my kids than to be studying. I think it is time for a new game plan because i MUST get this done.

And, believe it or not, I DO WANT THIS!!!!!

I try to remember the 3 main reasons why I want to be a CPA, so every time I lose motivation I go back to them:

1)Better Salary/Job

2)Provide for myself and family

3)Personal goal and the prestige/respect that comes with it

as Tchole stated you have to remember why you want it. Actually take what Jeff said in his survival guide and tape your 3 reasons to your monitor so that you have to stair at it every day!

I studied after my daughter's bed time every day. She would go down around 8pm, and I studied until midnight. The trick was to no do anything after I put her down except get my study materials out and have at it. If I tried to do anything else (grab a snack, walk the dog, or the worst…turning on the TV) in between I would get distracted and it was almost impossible to start studying.

Put yourself on a daily schedule and force yourself to stick to it. Otherwise you have to figure out how to fit studying in again…and that is more of a drain on your time than doing it right the first time.

Motivation is overrated. Don't rely on it. If you only did laundry, vacuumed, and dusted when you felt “motivated” to do it, your home would be a disaster. Treat it like it is not optional and study even when its the very LAST thing you want to do.

I nearly always agree with mla11692, but for once I'm going to take the opposite stance.

In life, motivation is everything.

A lot of people have messy houses because they aren't motivated to clean, i.e. they just don't care what anybody thinks or nobody important ever comes over that they want to impress. Very few people clean a house just to make themselves feel better. Just like exercising, few people do it for health, most do it to look good in a bathing suit, or something less (look at married couples past 35 and see how many are still fit).

Why do most people go into accounting? Because it is decently secure and they can achieve a middle class existence for themselves and their family. I don't know too many people who wake up hungry to hit Excel or a 1040 just for the heck of it. If security for my family wasn't a motivating factor I'd be at the track or the poker table in a second.

Or at the club with Skynet seeing if any rain was in the forecast.

The motivation you need is that you don't want to spend more money on exam, waste more time ‘studying' and most of all you don't want the looming exam hovering over you!

My struggle wasn't the lack of motivation but availability of other better things to do. I do regret not spending enough time for each exam sitting. I'm only half way through but looking back, had I studied harder I might already be done with the CPA journey. Also failing same exam multiple times is discouraging but you have to accept it and move on. This blogging site has done so much good to me because I no longer feel I am alone. You all are out there studying for the same thing, going through the same painful experience so y'all have been very helpful.

I understand people get burnt out from studying, but I think the motivation should always be there. The motivation IS earning your CPA and, if your company offers it, your CPA bonus. It sounds to me like you feel you're being forced into completing the certification and don't really care about the outcome. You should take a step back and ask yourself if this is something you really want. If so, why? Keep reinforcing it to yourself daily. Best of luck!
