Knowing when to move on?

I am currently studying for my first exam FAR and shooting to take it in April. I am currently studying with Gleim material and on the 3rd unit. When doing MCQs, I have seen people agree that you should be scoring an 80% or higher before moving on. That being said, first 2 units I would do MCQs until I got an 80% twice in a row then move on to the next study unit. But a lot of the questions would reappear on those multiple quizzes that by then I had memorized the answer. (Although I would either work out the problem by hand or in my head anyways so I knew how to calculate/understand it). I guess my question is when should you feel comfortable to move on to another section once you are getting an 80% on the MC quizzes? Sometimes I feel like I don’t understand the concept completely but would get over the 80%. I don’t want to spend so much time on one section when their is a lot more material to cover and also that could also help understand topics at the beginning of the chapters.

Any advice would be appreciated so I don’t get behind schedule.

    FAR - 46, 79 (7/8/14)
    AUD - 56, 59, 2/23/15 3rd times a charm!
    BEC - 69, 74 Really??
REG - April, I hope. Fingers crossed!

I move on once I can identify why the answer is right along with why all of the other answers are wrong. I haven't gotten back any scores yet but hopefully this strategy paid off.

    AUD - 2/1/2014 - 92
    BEC - 2/8/2014 - 79
    REG - 5/17/2014
    FAR - 5/21/2014

    CA Ethics Exam - Passed

That makes sense. I hope it works for you! Think I will give it a shot as well. I just don't want to spend so much time on one section when I have a lot more topics to cover.

I use Gleim for my review and I don't worry about getting 80% until I am reviewing. I go through the steps that Gleim has outlined (MCQ, audio/visual, T/F, read chapter, MCQ, Sims). I don't do any MCQs in the test prep until I am ready to review. I usually give myself 2-3 weeks to rewrite notes and do non stop MCQs. It has worked for FAR, AUD, and REG. I didn't pass REG until I switched to Gleim and followed their steps.

    REG - 64, 72, 81!
    FAR - 77
    AUD - 79
    BEC - 72, 79! And Done!

Part of this adventure is figuring out what works best for you and figuring out how to “tweak” the recommended steps in order to best fit your own needs.

My first exam was FAR. I started out by going through the entire Gleim suggested study steps, but quickly found that it was rather inefficient for my style of learning (thought very thorough if you take the extra time). The Audiovisual did nothing for me, so I cut those out of my schedule (I did quickly go through them all for the CPA prep tips, though, to pick up on needed advice). I didn't like doing a practice run of questions before doing the reading, so I stopped doing the MCQ Quiz #1 and T/F quizzes. I ended up 1) Reading; 2) doing 2-3 MCQ Quizzes in test prep, then 3) 1 Sim for each section. If I struggled, it was time to re-read and try some more MCQ. This experience allowed me to get comfortable with the testing application/environment/timing.

My second exam was AUD. I changed my routine to 1) Read, 2) Do ALL MCQ's in Study Mode, and 3) 1 Sim. Having already trained myself on answering in a test-environment, I felt the study-mode was more efficient for applying the concepts I read about. I could get the full range of questions and get immediate feedback about why my first choice was wrong. By the time I finished answering the 100+ questions, I felt I had a good handle on that section. Then I would do a sim from each section to get used to the type of sims to expect in the exam.

I took REG third and used the same approach as AUD, though I haven't received my score yet. I'm using the same approach for my BEC test I'm taking on Monday. I consider myself an excellent test taker with above average ability to recall things (especially on MCQ's).

Ultimately, you have to figure out your own best method for preparing.

I'm doing gleim aud right now. My first quiz before I have read anything or studied anything is always 50% or lower. Then I go through what I got wrong and do the following suggested steps. My second quiz is usually never above a 75. So my combined quizzes are always below 66 % where gleim says they want you to be. So I get an email saying that each section is my weak area and to focus on it on my final review. Well I practice MCQs after the sims so I eventually do so many MCQs that I start to get it. So should I worry that the quizzes and simulations don't combine for a score of 66?

    Thanks.

    AUD 66, 55, 74, 72
    BEC 79

I came to same conclusion as Drake11. Read and then knock out questions. We'll see if it helps on my AUD exam Friday.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

@Drake11 – Thanks for the tips. I just finished unit 3, starting on the next one I will go in with a different strategy to see what I feel comfortable doing. I am not a good test taker and memory isn't that great. Lucky you! I hope I can even get somewhat close to your scores 🙂

@Ajaz0810 – I get the same scores you do when I follow the Gleim study guide. That is why I feel like I am not doing good, because of the low scores. At least someone is in the same boat as me. My quizzes combine for around a 66% too, hope that is not telling us both something. More MCQs…boo!

    AUD - 56, 59, 2/23/15 3rd times a charm!
