Here is my ditty for the day:
I have two boys: one in his second year at the University of Knoxville, the other second year of high school. But in some ways, I think I now have two more: (ok, I am lovingly calling them kids, no disrespect here at all) my in laws. Here is a vent of a different color on kids and studying.
My in laws live nearby. So when my hubby is out of town, I try to check in with them.
Here is my phone call:
Me: MorningâŠhow are you guys doing? BTW Happy B-day!
MIL (mother-in-law) Thanks. Great. Your FIL (He has Alzheimerâs) is so good, he didnât have to take his nighttime pill last night.
Uncomfortable pause~
Me: Oh wow, that is good. (I donât even have to hide my sarcasm, she doesnât notice it, and this is a bonus!)
MIL: (Under her breath) Well today is good, but yesterdayâŠugh.
I wonder why she is talking under her breath, he can hear her. I realize that he doesnât always understand, but this morning he was very lucid. Usually she talks about him in third person in front of him, which is tricky, but I am thinking, the gig is up, he is on to this.
Me: What happened? Is Gramps ok?
MIL: Well, he wanted to take the car out for a drive. (He hasnât been able to drive in years. But sometimes he gets agitated and just wants to drive). I told him no, and he wouldnât listen and he grabbed the keys. (I am thinking, I wish she should HIDE the keys like we keep asking her to do, because one time he went out for a joy ride and, thankfully, didnât hurt himself or anyone else, but tore up the front of the car and ended up at Wal Mart talking with the cops) So, I called the Police.
Me: Why didnât you call me, I would have come over? (Wow, I am thinking this is nuts, because why does stuff like this happen when my hubby is out of town?)
MIL: Well, I didnât really call them, I hung up. (Ok, wait for itâŠ) Your FIL straightened up after I told him I called. (And, here it isâŠ) But they called back! I wasnât expecting that. They were very nice.
Me: Well, yes, the police and fire dept. always call back.
MIL: Anyway, it all turned out, I didnât want to bother you, and so I handled it. (Now I am overridden with guilt because that translated, as she didnât want to interrupt my studying.) Well, your FIL is very excited about our guests arriving today (yikes, he didnât take a night time pill, Lord, please make this day ok) I let him buy 3 (only 3) big bottles of Dr. Pepper as a treat. (OMG, really? Like sugar and caffeine wonât affect him? She knows this. What, is she going to give him ice cream next? You donât want to hear about that!!! It is that role reversal, the kids become the parentsâŠso, I do what any parent in the right mind would do, I let it slide, because today is her b-day)
Tomorrow my MILâsheâs grounded! Hehehe
