HI! Does anyone have any issues studying for FAR? I’ve finally started studying again and scheduled for my test in February. I’m still just getting through the material, but I feel like I forget whatever I’ve just read as soon as I’ve made it past the sentence. It is sooooo painful! And not to mention that just looking at the numbers in the book make me feel like I’m reading chinese…:( Any suggestions people? Does this get better later when I’m actually doing the MCQs? I just don’t want this all to be a waste of time. I feel like I need to at least read/skim through all this reading materials at least once.

This might not work for everyone but I don't read the material. I use beckers and this is what I do.

    – Videos
    – re write what they have us highlight and write down.
    – start banging out questions.

For me, reading it was a waste of time b/c I wasn't grasping anything.

    -----------------------------
    BEC - 77, 03/2015 (first try)
    FAR - 79, 05/2015 (second try)
    REG - 83, 12/2015 (first try)
    AUD - 84, 03/2015 (first try)

I got 99 problems but the CPA ain't one.

I had similar problems. I read the book, wrote my own notes. I'd study notes on off study time to not lose track (but honestly not as much as I'd like). I got through the entire book. Left myself two weeks for review. During those two weeks I read my notes again re-writing only example problems and journal entries). Doing MCQ for the section. If I knew it well I moved on. I felt like I forgot all of it until I sat down for review and it all came right back. Then is when I really honed in on problem areas. I didn't do MCQ while reviewing the book and a lot of people don't recommend that but I didn't have enough time. I only hit MCQ at the end and I regretted not doing them earlier on.

Repetition is key. If you don't know it, study more. You may have to study more than others. I spent an entire weekend on statement of cash flows because I wanted to make sure I could create the entire statement without the books help. That section helped me a lot with J/E

With the FAR exam, it is a must that you know the material inside and out. Therefore, to mitigate the risk of you losing information you studied, it might be a good idea that after you finish reviewing a new section to re-write a summary (just takes 30 minutes) of a previous section.

For example, after finishing cost & equity method, go back and re-write the GAAP conceptual framework. Spend some time flipping through note cards on qualitative characteristics. Or after you finish reviewing Earnings per Share, go back and review notecards on treasury stock method vs par method, and do a couple of questions.

You won't remember everything, but that's OK. So long as you learn it and understand it, you can forget some of it, and be able to re-learn or remember when you are reviewing 2 weeks before the exam. In my case I crammed 3 full days of study time. I recommend 1-2 weeks.

For me, the best way to study is to listen to each lecture and answer questions on that section before moving on. If you use Becker or any other exam material at least twice, you should be able to pick up on the material after that time. I would spend 2 to 3 days on the lecture and 2 to 3 days on the mc questions. I would do this two times around before even thinking about taking the exam. I did not review the sims on any section except REG and only a couple at that. From learning the material you should be able to apply that to the sims without actually studying the sims, at least it worked for me.

I don't have access to my videos anymore. My first go-around with the CPA I used Becker and I don't feel like it prepared me as well. This time around I'm just using NINJA only. I think my main issue is that I am getting overwhelmed due to the monstrosity of material in this exam. Right now I'm trying to get through the material so I can see it at least once before I start doing all of the MCQs… >.<
