No, typing as a learning tool is not as effective as hand writing. Studies have been done that indicate that there is a connection to the brain that's made when you handwrite something that's more permanent/learned better than when you type something. I hear ya on the hand cramps though.

I hand wrote my notes first and then retyped them. I liked them typed because it was easier for me to read and study from. Just my preference.

Welcome! My hand will be cramping right along with yours. I like jjm's idea of rewriting once, then typing for organization/ease of reading. Best of both worlds right there.

Yeah I absolutely hated writing that much. I actually took a full set of notes for AUD for the lectures, but then never read them (partly due to time restraints). My notes consisted of the MCQs. I would write notes based off the questions right and wrong answers. I felt those were the most important notes. I would then read the Becker Final Review book that summarized major topics and then listen to the Final Review lectures to and from work. Then knock out MCQs the rest of the time. That was my main study plan.

I've heard/read that the act of handwriting is a better memory tool than typing. However I don't handwrite anything ever (and I would not have been able to do the exam in the paper & pencil days) and retyped all of my notes 3x for AUD. It did work……

Of course I didn't score in 80s often and never in the 90s…but I passed and it seemed to be enough for me to pass. 🙂

Passing is all that matters – not what your exact scores are. Congrats & good job!

I hand wrote them and then retyped them……I'll dissent here.

I think it is important to do either hand writing or typing……especially if you type in Excel format. Crazy? Nope. Excel is just clumsy enough that it causes you to slow down and think about the thing you are typing. Plus typing errors make you back up and restart the thought. So I would say that between making sure I didn't type to far out to the right and fixing errors in typing, I had to rethink the though several times. Writing is the same way, you rethink the thought several times when writing it out.

    Repetition is the key.

p.s. if you are going to hand write them, rewrite them in block letters not cursive. Slows you down and makes your mind rethink the thought several times.
