Is it worth appealing a score/can I do it in NY?

Failed REG by one tiny, yet very insulting, point. Is it worth appealing it? I ask because these exams have taken a significant toll on my health and I am not sure I can go through the stress of studying and taking another exam. I have a partially paralyzed stomach and stress makes all the symptoms much much worse. It is my last exam.

    Thoughts?!

    Thanks in advance?

never heard of anyone successfully appealing their score. And you have to pay to appeal it. Everything I have read says don't bother with an appeal that it isn't worth it.

Agreed. I recall reading on the AICPA (?) website that there were no score appeals in 2011 that resulted in a changed score. Who knows if that was the case for 2012 as well, but you're probably going to stress yourself out more (and waste a bit of money) by appealing.

smp73: I understand what you are going through at this moment. I have successive 74s in BEC and have contacted AICPA / NASBA since the scores are not appealble from the state jurisdiction in which I am appearing . In my opinion, appealing the score is waste of time, resources and energy. The following are the extracts of the response from the agency:

” However, please be advised that whenever a candidate scores between 69-74 the AICPA automatically rescores the examination to ensure the accuracy before releasing the scores.”

” I am sure you are aware that it is not unusual for candidates to have to take sections several times before they pass them and you really are very close. I hope that you will not give up your efforts to pass the examination.”

Since you are very close to the passing grade make some study adjustments and give a shot at the earliest. DONT GIVE UP. Take the positive meaning from the second sentence from the agency.

    Class of 2012 - 13.

I considered it too when I failed FAR by 1. I looked into it and there has not been a single score change as a result of a rescore (other than the big REG/FAR scoring issue recently).

For me it would have been $200 to apply for a rescore with a waiting period of up to 8 weeks. I decided it wasn't worth even considering it really.

Don't give up. I ended up passing my retake, so just put as much time in as you can on another review and give it another shot. A 74 is the most painful score you can get. Try not to let it throw you off track.

@smp73, please take a look at my scores and number of exam attempts in my signature. I just found out yesterday that I finished this traiin ride through hell. I gave up once for about 9 months and it nagged me until I decided to give it a shot again. Took me almost three years but I managed to stick it out. If it is really what you want then don't give up. You should read my blog here about my journey before you decide to quit

@smp73 The REG test gave me successive 74's. I was frustrated. I ended up getting the Wiley Online Test bank which was a fresh start after using Becker for the two tests that gave me the 74's. I also increased my note taking. Please take notes! I did the SIMS in Wiley several times and I took loads of notes. I started from the beginning with my studying as if I was seeing it for the first time. I studied 8 weeks on my third attempt which was the charm – I went from 74, 74, to 86! You can do it. Study all the time! Much success to you!

I would definitely try to take it next window. You made a 74. You know this stuff. But you need to work mcq's until you are sick of them because every test is different. Know why an answer is right and why the wrong answers are wrong so you can understand the theory. If you feel you can be ready in a month or so then take it close to the beginning of the window. if you don't feel like that is enough time then wait til closer to the middle or end of the window.

I took insane notes for it this last time…a few days before my exam I spilled coffee in my bag and ruined the notes (and the bag) and it totally threw me off. It was everything I wanted to reviewed..ruined. I have the test bank, switched study materials for this last one, bought the ninja notes and audio. Even dealt with some signifcant health problems that left me on a liquid diet. THe 74 is crushing. I think a 2 would have felt better. So discouraging. Guess I have some thinking to do…

smp73: Advice from an old dog. Don't make important decisions under duress. Take a few days to let your head clear before you start to seriously weigh your options.

    Good luck.

“I guess it comes down to if I really want it…and right now I am not sure that I do.”

I have been there!!! I started this exam for the first time in January 2009. I passed BEC with a 75 then failed REG with a 73. It was a major downward spiral from there and I decided I had no desire to even work on the exam anymore and stopped trying.

Fast forward a few years, I am now 1 exam away from being done, and honestly I'm proud of myself. Don't give up. Occasionally I want to kick myself for giving up the first time around, but instead I just focus on how I will feel once I'm done. I know the 74 feels like the end of the world. That's how it felt to me for a few days. But you just have to jump right back in and don't let it beat you.

Yes…the 74 feels like the end of the world. “Non-CPA'ers” don't think its that bad. It is.

IIll give it some time before I decide. Is it bad that when I saw the word duress I thought about contracts and what type of duress would make them a void or voidable!?!

Thanks for all the advice. No one else really gets it!

I too, got a 74 in REG once upon a time….i didn't appeal the grade but i did ask for a review. Nothing changed. They just confirmed my 74 for $200. On one hand it was a complete waste of money….on the other hand i would have regretted not doing it as re-studying for an exam takes weeks and weeks away from my life. And with cheesedog on the duress thing, let yourself think things through before making a decision.
