Is it time to switch providers? I have had enough! - Page 3

    Hello All,

I am highly considering switching my review course. Why? Well, I am very dissatisfied and frustrated with a major course which is endorsed by the Big 4 firms. These lectures instruct one to ‘highlight this, circle this, and underline that.’ Also, they tend to focus on ‘how to do it’ and instead of ‘why it’ is.’ Hence, leading to a poor understand of the concepts, in my opinion. I have failed AUD 4xs with this famous ‘highlighting’ course and I have had enough!

That said, I would like the input of those who were successful with Northern Illinois University-NIU-review course. More specifically, did the professors actually ‘teach’ the material in their ‘live’ section?

Otherwise, I may just forfeit this CPA thing. Seems like the market is becoming saturated with this ‘prestigious credential’ anyways.

Sacrificed time away from family and friends and this CPA thing is starting to loose its novelty!!

    Thank you for your time!

    All,

I appreciate ‘the good, the bad, and the ugly' comments from current candidates. Yes, I will buckle down, save some $$$, consider NINJA notes and WTB or Jeff's newest weapon!

After all, I was once told it is best to view the material from different sources.

Oh, I had to throw in the comment of ‘saturation' because I knew it would force some to reply.

When I study with Becker, I highlight while listening to the lecture, then I read the chapter carefully and take notes in my own words.

Reread my notes and memorize / understand most of them.

Do the MCQs over and over

    FAR - 76*, 73, 85
    BEC - 69, 72, 78*, 80
    AUD - 72, 71, 90
    REG - 71, 74, 85

    AFTER 3 YEARS I'M DONE!!!

Well, it looks like you found your paddle. Check my signature for a list of required ingredients. I worry about the desire not being strong enough with this one.

‘These lectures instruct one to ‘highlight this, circle this, and underline that.' Also, they tend to focus on ‘how to do it' and instead of ‘why it' is.' Hence, leading to a poor understand of the concepts, in my opinion.'

I sort of agree with you. Becker lectures were by far my least favorite part of the Becker ‘package.' I never took those instructions literally (it may work for some people but definitely did not work for me). However, the practice tests, multiple choice questions, and the ability to click a button and go directly to the spot in the text and lecture relating to a question you failed and/or are struggling with, are fantastic.

ALOT of people pass these exams using only Becker, so it is very possible.

I think that you should just buckle down and really focus on the practice questions. I'm skeptical of the benefits of supplementing (there is more than enough material in Becker and, generally, there is no need to spend additional money). I didn't even have enough time to get through all of the Becker materials once, much less seriously ‘supplement' it with other review aids. But if you've reached a breaking point with Becker and think a change would be helpful – go for it. Since you seem to primarily be angry at the lecture – if you could do a ‘live course' or somehow purchase just the lecture portion of another review course, that may be a good path to take. There are more than enough MCQs and text in Becker to get you prepared and that is where, IMO, the key to passing these exams really lies.
