Is the CPA Exam Wrong for Some People? - Page 4

I know I’ve seen a ton of post like this that are saying “Help I’m losing motivation”, but I just really want some feedback.

Sometimes, I honestly feel like this CPA exam isn’t the right path for me. I guess you could say I don’t have motivation, but also, I just don’t feel like devoting allll my time to studying for these exams. I feel like I’m missing out on things, I’m ready to have kids that I’m putting off because of it and etc.

I currently work at a CPA firm as a tax accountant and I love doing taxes, but I’ve always said I’m very open to other fields than public accounting such as in a company accounting office, hospital, or oil/gas (I live in Texas).

Also, this company also has three managers that aren’t even CPAs. Is that normal??

I don’t ever want to be a manager or a partner or anything that requires much less work/life balance. I could honestly be happy the rest of my life with the amount of money I make now.

With all that being said, am I just being lazy and giving up if I decide not to study for the CPA exam anymore? or maybe am I just not right for it?

@ Time is Key… you seriously lack reading comprehension. Read my post again before you have a heart attack.

@Time is Key – Pot, meet kettle.

I think everyone is just overly sensitive. Sandra is entitled to her opinions and, in this case, I think she is pretty much dead on.

Sandra, we're all preaching our own truth.

There was a guy here who studied FAR in 9 days and passed…I think.

Why is everyone freaking out about what Sandra wrote? She was responding to the OP. The OP doesn't have kids and said she feels like she's lacking motivation to study and that's she's putting off having kids because of the exams. Read the OP's questions and then Sandra's response next and chill out people!

Case of the Mondays anyone? Geez.

    @ Sanda

Here is a piece of your post: “I don't mean to offend anyone that has struggled with these tests, but I really really believe that many people fail only because they blow this out of proportion and get themselves all wound up.”

To me, this is like saying the following, after voluntarily slapping someone: “I didn't mean to hurt you”

I absolutely don't lack reading comprehension, trust me on that. It's just that no matter how nice you think your advice is, you should read it and read it again before posting it. If there is something in there that might offend someone, don't apologize in advance and say it. Instead, just avoid saying it. 99 nice words can be completely ruined by 1 bad word.

My point is: who are you to try to justify why other people in the forum are failing? Instead, you should just try to justify or explain why you're passing. As simple as this!

Each person is entitled to his/her opinion but when your freedom of speech starts to alienate someone else, “we have a problem”

When Sandra said that some people “get themselves all wound up” she was quoting me. I have let this test give me anxiety attacks that have seriously interfered with my life, and I'm not alone in this. I do get myself all knotted up because I suck at taking tests. She is a very nice person and has been very supportive of me and a lot of other people. She never said that she was smarter than anyone else or said that she had passed any exams. I feel like she will pass them all the first time around, because she's very smart and apparently not afraid of anything. Those are two very good qualities. Some of us are sprinters and others are marathoners. I'm on mile 25 and seriously not alienated by her comments.

    Sandra, with you 100%.

@Time is key: give it a rest. I'm not trying to sound conceited either but I was president of my 2nd grade class so I think that gives me the same type of authority to comment on this situation. She's entitled to her opinion just like everyone else. You're trying to tell me that in your rise to accountant glory, you never once got chewed out by a manger? You were never told something that you didn't agree with? Her comments were very direct and I'm surprised that you can't appreciate that in your Big 4 position. I don't think her comments were disrespectful by any means. No need to jump on her like that, as if you know her character.

Justinnn, PA stands for Public Accountant, also known as LPA – Licensed Public Accountant or RPA (Registered Public Accountant), depending on the state of licensure.

More about the PA can be found here:

The designation is primarily used to screen for job candidates, promotions, and independent/consulting job opportunities. Unfortunately with jobs becoming scarcer, any extra credential can make or break a raise or a job position.

I don't know enough about your financial circumstances and your life. While you claim that you're content with making the same money now for the rest of your life, keep in mind that having and raising kids costs money, especially here in the States: Diapers, formula, pre-school, sports, extracurricular activities, summer camp, college, first car, first apartment, etc.

    Couldn't pass again!

This will come as a surprise to many of you but I will say it anyway:

Sandra, please accept my apology. Studying for the exam made me very irritable and I guess you're just an innocent victim of my frustration. I took what you said too personal and I'm sorry I did. If I could, I'll take back what I said.

You're entitled to your opinion and feel free to speak your mind as I won't oppose you again.

To everyone else who didn't like what I wrote, starting with you Entourage, I'm really sorry.

With that said, I'll retire from the forum to avoid causing similar problems again. I'll use the time I spend here posting hurtful messages, to study hard and pass my exam.

Good luck to all of you. Sandra, I have no doubt you'll pass all your exams. Maybe my reaction was out of jealousy because you will do in 3 months what it took me 2 years to do. Once again I'm sorry. It;s sad it has to end this way, but you won't see me around here again. Goodbye everyone.

    Questions:

Does a PA have to take an exam to get the designation? What are the education requirements?

What is the purpose of the designation? I'm not trying to be smart alec…I truly don't know.
