Trying to start a list of ingredients for a successful study group. Please feel free to add.

    1) Group members helped each other. During our Q2 FAR Group, all people contributed and took the time to explain their answers.

    2) There are no dumb questions or judging.

People need to stop asking super hard questions just to prove they are smart (I call it the peacock syndrome–like the bird, we have them in our yard)— folks who have to ask something hard and difficult to PROVE something but in the end they make others feel bad and fail themselves, just like male peacocks showing the feathers to make others feel small. I have been following this group for about a year and only started posting now. I was to scared to post since all the questions asked in the study group were so complex and NOTHING like the exam, in my opinion. Honestly, at first every time i came to this site i felt unprepared but I was prepared. Some of the peacocks need to become more honest so people (like me) are not afraid to ask questions, just think, there are SO many folks just watching this site but to afraid to post anything.

@java Kind of off topic for this thread but, what do you attribute to increasing your exam scores from your first exam?

Timing my exams. I didn't think about time on my first exam, my tip to all is just to leave as much time for simulations during the FAR, REG, and AUDIT exam. For BEC, i would say to focus on multiple choice. Also, I started giving myself more time on the first testlet so give yourself 5 extra minutes on your first testlet.

From the FAR group and also the REG group I saw the following happen which just made the whole study process awesome.

    1. Learning to Identify which people in the study group are strong in specific chapters. Example there will be a few strong in Individual tax and some in Corps while the rest are great at Partnerships.

    2. If you are strong in specfic areas – help the others better understand it.. In return others will help you in your weak areas.

    3. Be proactive in your study group. Talk more about the study material and less on your personal obstacles.

    4. Have one person that does a roll call on when everyone is taking their exams so everyone is aware of each others time line and those that are taking the exam close to each other can be on the same page when preparing for the review.

    5. Ask questions on areas you are not understanding. someone will explain

    6. When you attempt to explain don't just copy paste text book answer.. Try to answer it in your own words. This is how you really benefit as you are reinforcing the concept for your self and you are explaining to the other in “SIMPLE” words so they will better understand the concept as well.

PS give real life examples where ever possible.

    7. Do quiz sessions- pretty much like doing flashcards but instead of doing it along, its with a group.

    8. Motivate each other to study, set goals on what you are going to accomplish

Lastly – ensure you also spend time studying alone and building your foundation. You need to invest in yourself as no one else is going to do it for you. So use the online study group but don't spend hours and hours there. Balance things out to maximize your smart studying.

Ditto, what Kenada said. We had an awesome and very active REG study group which contributed to my success in passing round 3.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, even if you think it's stupid, ask it anyway, chances are other people have the same questions.

When I saw questions that were posted that I couldn't answer, it showed me that I needed to review the concepts and to step away from the quizzing.

I think posting difficult questions that you get wrong is helpful because most likely someone else got it wrong and would like some help as well and NYC would be able to answer it 🙂 lol.

Agree with most comments so far.

I would just add to make it an efficient use of time. In my experience, socializing and being unproductive happens more often than I'd like to admit, so maybe it's useful to have a plan like “tomorrow, let's go through some examples on pension accounting, cash flow statement analysis, and XYZ” so you have a goal, rather than just showing up and doing whatever.
