In a relationship and study for CPA

After finishing studying first chapter on AUD on Friday night, boyfriend called and make fun that are we not going to see each other till January 2012 cuz I have to study for CPA? I joked back that we will see each other sooner than that since there will be X’mas this month. It is hard to be the best girlfriend ever while studying for CPA. I could have finished a lot sooner if there weren’t so many things going on in my life, including be available all the time for someone special in your life. I really want to get over with my last part of exam (AUD) in Jan. 2012. I am sure there are other people like me on this blog.

Ah, I know. Sometimes I wonder if it would be easier to be lonely. Luckily I have a very supportive boyfriend who forces me to stick to my word when I say I need to study. I've found that I like studying at his house in a quiet room or something because then I'm not always thinking I need to rush through things so we can hang out. He peeks in for occasional encouragement and when I'm feeling the need to get away I go kick it with him for a few. It's nice that way…:)

It appears like you just started studying for CPA. I think it gets harder on the relationship after studying for few months. That's the real test on the relationship. I think I need more space for myself when I try to focus on something especially like CPA studies. You just need to stand firm on your ground sometimes if you need time for yourself especially one week before the exam. Good luck on everything!

as difficult as it is with a significant other–boyfriend, husband, etc.–parenting while studying is a NGHTMARE. Kids have no sense of humor at all when it comes to sacrificing mom for 14 months! LOL!!

You can either get tough now and really make sacrifices and try and pass as quickly as possible, or you can take the risk of not passing and take that time to spend (more than the minimum, anyway) with your other/family. That decision is really up to you. It definitely helps if you have a supportive group that is willing to share in that sacrifice and help you get it done as quickly as possible, but not so much when they're dragging their feet the whole way. Good luck, it's a battle!

I have been studying for the exam since October, and I agree with CPA Genie. In the beginning, it wasn't a huge strain on the relationship (my bf has always been very supportive), but a couple of months in, and I am starting to see the effect caused by the decrease in time spent together. I think if your bf/gf is supportive though, you will find what works for you, and sometimes it's important to sit them down and have a talk to make sure you guys are on the same page. We are learning to accept that we can't hang out as often, but I still come to study at his apartment. What helps me is studying Friday night and ALL DAY Saturday (ugh). This enables me to be able to escape for a dinner out on Saturday night and then time to watch a movie (I am not usually up for wild nights these days lol). Then I either take off Sunday or spend it catching up on topics I still need to review. In time, you find what works for you. Communication goes a long way in helping that process though.

CPA process is similar to being an on call physician. You are not available for him 100% and sometimes you will not be available. It's a test; however, a good one. You will find out if he is supportive or selfish. Without this process, you may not find out until you move in or get married. Think CPA process is the safest bet:)

    Yvonne is definitely right.

I always knew that my boyfriend and I have had a stellar relationship but the last 6 months have really solidified our loyalty and strengthened our relationship. I've only been seeing him once a week since starting the CPA and he's been the most supportive and understanding boyfriend imaginable. Part of it is that we do make the effort to make our 1 night together make up for the rest of the week.

Another thing that helped us was that I bought a certificate for a couples massage to redeem when I finish my last exam. This was to serve as a treat not only for my stressed body but as a thank you for him for putting up with me all this time. It's important to acknowledge the sacrifices that not only you make but those made by the significant other as well. Most importantly, remember that there is an end to this thing! 🙂

I can relate to this post. I recently just pass my last part of the exam but i remembered when i first begin my journey of studying. My husband got frustrated with me and we fight alot more because im always stress out and he bored and he want to do thing and I can't because I always have to study. He tried to understand since he went through the same thing (he a CPA also) but sometimes i feels like he forgot the feelings or what is like to have to study all the time or feels guilty when you not studying.

my family and friends are very supportive, and they know how much effort and time I need to invest to pass this exam. Sometimes, the hard part about your CPA exam on the relationship is feeling so guilty for ignoring your significant one. Even though they are understanding and supportive, you might feel so guilty to leave her/him at home while you are going to the library studying for months…

I am so glad I have this waiting-your-score-out-time so that I can catch a break from studying. It's crazy. I want this wait to end soon so I can move on to the next one, but I want it to last a little longer for my break. 🙂
