So, I found out last Friday that I was getting a lot of additional responsibilities added to my formal job description, but no additional pay. I was hired in as an entry level staff accountant and was gradually given more and more of my coworker’s higher level work to do (while she spends more and more time on Facebook each day). I finally stuck up for myself about a year ago and my boss agreed that my position description should be evaluated. One year later and I find out that I get the additional responsibilities formerly added, but no raise. I currently make about 25-30% less than the average accountant makes in my area. I have a MBA and about 10 years of experience.

I was in tears last week when I found out and I let my boss know that I feel taken advantage of. Now I feel like I am shunned because I stood up for myself. I have a follow up meeting with him that he initiated this afternoon. Has anyone else been in this situation?

OP – I have been in a similar situation. I was attending graduate school to get my MBA, and was being paid 20%-25% below market value. I did the research on my positions pay, and submitted it to HR for review. The president of the company was also talking about a mentorship program for promising employees to work up to executive management. The day after receiving my MBA I went to discuss these opportunities, and was told everything had been shelved. I was also informed by HR that my pay was correct for my position, which was a crock of sh!t.

What did I do? I called my wife immediately with the update, and she started scanning the web for local jobs. I received a job offer making 50% more by the end of the week. The demand for accountants is promising, and you should not worry about this. Still, I think you should search for a new job no matter the outcome. They have already shown their character by taking advantage of you, and I would not work for someone who does not value their employees.

Thank you all for the encouragement. The organization I work for is a very well known large private university and I get the feeling that they think that everyone that works here should just feel honored to work here and take whatever they can get. They use the excuse all the time that everyone that works here makes less because they are a non-profit. I can accept that to some extent, maybe a 5-10% discount on the normal average salary for that position in our area. I just can't accept being paid $43.5 when the average accountant where I live makes $58k.

I'm pretty sure non profits are required to show executive salaries. I'd be anxious to see what your big boss makes.

I wouldn't waste any more emotional energy on this…time to look for a better-paying job it sounds like.

Just a little too much excitement all at once, you will be fine no matter the outcome, and I would concur with the look for a new job either way, you will land much farther ahead.

Well, I didn't get fired, but didn't get a raise either. I think my boss feels like a should be interested in waiting for an internal position to open up, but I will definitely be looking elsewhere!
