Hi I just moved to the US after working in finance in India for over 4 yrs . With a baby due in Jan, i am looking to enroll in the CPA exam in Cincinnati. However i am lost on the requirements here and the ways to first start preparing . How do i lay my hands on inexpensive material? Is it enough to go thru the likes of Becker review material or does one need more? I have some very basic questions and looking for a kindred spirit to help me figure things out.

Is anyone out there that can help?

Hi there! First, I would check the state's board of accountancy site. find out the requirements for SITTING for the exam, before you purchase materials. I am not familiar with Ohio's requirements, but once you have figured out that you are eligible to sit, go ahead and apply; it will take them time to approve you, so in the meantime, look around at demos for study material. I didn't go with becker, because of the price tag…. we'll see if it was the right choice. I am using ExamMatrx, which is a computer program with immediate feedback and performance tracking. It runs about $300 per section ($900 for all four parts).

    Best of luck!

    BEC - 7/28/2012 - 79
    FAR - 4/6/2013 - 79
    REG - 4/18/2013 - 75 (3rd time's a charm!)

Spotter's right that the first step is to find out Ohio's requirements and start the application process. Getting the application approved and receiving your NTS can take several weeks. Which review materials work best for you depends on your learning style, whether you need a review course or a teaching course, and how much self-discipline you have when studying. There are several options that you can look at – Yaeger, Gleim, Bisk, Roger, CPAExcel – in addition to Becker. Also, Wiley has a self study book that can be used on its own or as a supplement for additional explanation and problems. Whichever choice of review course you use, I'd highly recommend a test bank. You need to do lots and lots of MCQ to really learn the material, and a test bank is a great way to get extra practice. Also, most courses offer a discount if you buy all the exams at once. However, that's not necessarily the best deal. Different courses may be better for you on the different exams. Also, you don't want to be stuck with outdated materials if it takes longer for you to complete the exams than you currently expect.

    Good luck

    AUD 4/15/11 - 85
    REG 4/29/11 - 80
    BEC 5/13/11 - 85

Thanks so much Spotter and KB, that really helps. Also, how does one go about finding a study partner?

Hi Lavanya. I'm also from India looking to do CPA. First you may need to do your transcripts done from the Centers which your State Board suggest to evaluate the eligibility which will take around a month then submit to State Board. First do you transcripts done and in the meantime check all course materials available as others suggested.

    I'm from VA.
