Husband and trying to study for my Exams - Page 2

My husband didn’t go to college, he chose to work (a lot) in his family business. They call him at any time of the day, whenever, wherever. He tries to have a set schedule, 8-9 hours a day, but some days he can pull 20 hour days, for days.

Anyways, I guess I just wanted to find out from other wives if their husbands are supportive of you studying for the CPA exams, as it is very stressful. I know some say their husbands ARE supportive even when they have kids etc., but I wonder if it is someone who went to college and UNDERSTANDS these exams aren’t easy college exams. I almost feel like he tries to put me down for wanting to achieve this “goal” where he chose a different path to just to go work, i could’ve done the same also but I wanted to be able to be financially secure (even before I met him) because i knew my parents weren’t going to be around to support me forever.

Or if some of you have husbands (like mine) who think they’re being supportive but really think AND say you’re spending too much time studying and not enough time with them (i study 8 hrs a day, broken up into 3-4 hour increments throughout the day).

Even though I take sundays off, friday nights off, saturday nights he has his games so I take advantage of that time to study. I don’t work full time but will start working full-time in about 2 weeks. I do all the cleaning and cooking around the house. He doesn’t understand that when I have an exam coming up, i need to study as much as I can .

    Any helpful input is appreciated.

I definitely wish I was one of those people who got all 4 exams done in 4 months, but unfortunately LIFE (being a newlywed, stress, adjusting to newlywed life and cpa exam study life, as well as starting a job with a Big4 which I am very happy about) got in the way, just happy that I am passing period!!

    Full disclosure: I'm a dude.

Does he make enough on his own to support both of you in the immediate term and a future family? If not, tell him to suck it up and make more money or deal with the fact that you have to pursue a career as well. You don't exist to cook and clean for him and play with him when he's free. If that's what he expected, then shame on him for not confirming this with you before tying the knot.

CPA is stressful on all relationships… spouses, children, family, friends… they will all feel the lack of your presence for a while. It's not easy. It's a price we all have to decide the value for ourselves.

    2ndgoround and fuzyfro,

thanks for your input guys 🙂 Since i'm about to start working next week, i've decided to only study up until 5-6pm, whatever I get done, gets done. If not, i'll make up for it the next day. I liked it because it also allowed me to take a break and relax and be less stressed. however, since i'm about to start working, I have no idea how it's going to be. I will learn as i go. I have gotten through 6 chapters of reg once (reading and hw) so when i'm working ill just have 7-8 and then review, which hopefully won't be so bad. i saved the lectures for review and do the sims whenever i have time also. then redo all the hw questions. I will be reviewing as much as i can of my becker flashcards while at training so the things ive learned to far, stay fresh.

And I agree with you, I am glad I don't have any kids right now and I give major props to those of you that have kids and are doing these exams!!!

He has been paying the bills for 9 months straight now since i'm not working which just our mortgage alone is 2k. but I keep telling him, bringing kids into the picture is going to require more money and time, i don't want kids right now. I want to be financially and mentally ready maybe in 5 years. I have SPENT the last 7 years in college/exams and always saying no to going out with friends or have only traveled with my parents, I want to enjoy life a little now that I actually will have a good paying job. Then later, i can have a stress free pregnancy, hopefully. i wont be stressing about these exams at least. He is also excited about the $$$ i'll be making but once i start working he is going to need to know to help out around the house too. Multiple times he has already told me that “he's working” and i'm “only studying” so that's about to change as of next week ha. When he comes home, he sits on the couch and watches movies. I on the other hand will be studying!

I am DEFINITELY not quitting!!! I've thought about it many times during this Cpa exam process, BUT I've already gotten THIS FAR, I know i'd regret it for the rest of my life if I quit now!

Thanks for your encouragement and for sharing your stories 🙂

I think now that i've gotten FAR done, the rest of it should be smooth-ER sailing than FAR was for me 🙂 Far was traumatizing.
