How to study with kids?

How in the world do you that have children (my sweet baby is 2 1/2) find time to devote to studying, working, and still find time to spend with your children?

I usually wait to study until the kids are in bed (~9:00 PM or so) and study from 9:00 to 11:30-12:00 (Our boys are 4 and 1 1/2). On Saturday, I get split sessions of around 4-5 hours total throughout the day, with the bulk coming after bed time. Sunday is usually verboten, unless something happened during the week and I need to make up time.

That being said, I usually have an open door policy when I'm studying and my kids can bug me if need be. I figure if I can pay attention while they interrupt me, taking a test at Prometric should be a piece of cake.

Its hard.. I have 2 boys, 13 and 9 and although they are older and somewhat independent I still have to make sure they are fed, and finished with homework, get to their school and after school activities on time and various other things.. I try to study whenever and where ever I get time. I am not working yet so I plan to maximize this time and get done with all 4 parts before work starts.

It def helps if the your husband or significant other takes over for somethings. My husband has started cooking a lot more now and on the weekends he takes over the kids so I get a lot done on weekends.

Its a challenge but not impossible.. We can do it 🙂 and we shall!!

Love the suggestion, Zieba!!! Not sure DHR will be down with it, though. Haha!

I just found out I made a 70 on FAR, and I am just not sure how to squeeze more time out of the day. It helps a lot knowing there are other parents out there who are making it work. My husband is great, but ready for me to be done with the exam. Tired of having our lives revolve around my studying.

I am twenty months into it…ten years out of school, it indeed is getting tiring. Just found out I have one more to go, so I'll be getting off this ride soon.

I have a 2 1/2 year old and a 3 month old. The key for me was waking up around 5 am to get in 2 hours to study in quiet. Then, studying during lunch at work. By the time I got home from work and we got them to bed, I was too exhausted at 8 pm to do anything productive for the rest of the night.

It's very difficult. Don't think I could have done it without my supportive spouse.

This is my kind of thread! First of all, it's not easy studying with kids (regardless of how many you have). I signed up for my first exam when we had a 3 year old and a 7 month old. Before the exam arrived my wife got pregnant again…with twins! I passed the exam and then went into total Dad-mode preparing for their arrival. Once they were born and a few months old, I had to get back on the horse and finish out the exams before losing my REG credit. I basically did all of my studying after the kids went to bed (8pm). Typically, my studying was done between 9pm and midnight. I tried not to study on the weekends if possible. Honestly, it would've been impossible anyways with 4 kids in the house running around.

Long story short: everyone's situation is different; you just have to make the time.

Silver lining: now that I'm done, the time I normally used to study for the CPA feels like new found free time.

Yup at night after they were in bed and lunchtime at work.

Little things make a huge difference too. Paper plates and silverware to save time doing dishes, when you cook double or triple it to freeze for a quick and easy reheat another time, crockpot meals to save time. A sitter for a couple of hours on the weekend.

It's beyond exhausting but it's not forever and worth the sacrifice.
