AnonymousInactiveOkay, I have been looking for a job for about 3 months now. Just yesterday, literally within 10 minutes of one another, I found out that first, I got a job offer, and second, that my dad has a life-threatening brain tumor. After that, I completely lost the will to study for the CPA exam. How do you still remain focused to study? I mean, stuff like this could’ve at least spread themselves out on different days.

testszMemberCongratulations on the job offer….but I am very sorry to hear about your dad.
To be honest, I would take some time off and focus on either helping your dad or your own stress with a family member in danger. The CPA exam is just that….an exam. You can study and take it whenever you want.

AnonymousInactiveMy family is going through tough times myself. Tough enough to realize that the only way that I can make it better is if I am financially successful and have a stable career. So far its been enough to keep me going.

AnonymousInactiveHi there,
By experience, I would take a break for the exam and deal with my emotions and personal issues.
If you put yourself under high stress it will be very bad for your health and maybe you will fail the exam anyway.
Be with your father, comfort him, find psychological help and plan to do the exam for later..
As per your job, that will be very good for your motivation to get the CPA. All will be ok with the time.
That would be my advice,

KayMember@CPA_Romantic:
I feel your hardship. I been through many things during my CPA prep. My CPA journey started in January 2012. I got married in Oct 2012, took 3 weeks of time off. And in November and December, my father had heart stance treatment, and took more bloodthinner, so he kept nose-bleeding all day, and went to ER several times. So I couldn't focus on study well. Now that my wife is pregnant and baby is due on 4/3/2013. and now I am buying a house, and targetting to close on 3/18/2013. There were a lot of going back and forth with mortgage broker, attorney, and realtors.
If you are determined that you are going to become a CPA, then you should stay focus (I guess you are already determined per your post)
The way I managed to pass three exams (AUD, BEC, and FAR) on the top of working full time, is “let go” everything unrelated to CPA out of your mind. I cut down on talking to friends, and dont go out much. Also, I reduced dinner time down to 20 mins. Once done with dinner with 20 mins, then have 30~40 mins break, and then sit in front of CPA material.
I prioritized CPA study over wife, baby, and father. My wife supported me to stay focused on study. My father's health condition was frustrating because of nose-bleeding for more than 2 weeks, but it was not life-threatening, so even though I was worried about him, I trusted doctors and strived to focus on study. I would say this was about physical point of view – I have only one body myself, so I cannot do multi-tasking, need to choose what I can do with one body in most efficient way.
In mental emotional aspect, I was very stressed because I had to get married, and there were many arguments with wife, and parents about wedding plan. Also, I felt guilty that I did not pay my full attention to father, even though I couldn't do anything for my father in any productive way. I was very frustrated, and even depressed, I felt that my life was miserable, and wouldn't go any better. But I kind of managed my daily life. I knew that even though there are on-going concerns, I could focus on studying eventually by making some progress – try to focus on study for 1hour at the beginning, try not to think of any concerns in your life, that one hour is only for you to study. Try that for 1 week, then you will have enough space in your mind for CPA study. Then gradually increase study time up to 2~3 hours a day. It will allow you to juggle your concern about father, effort required at your work, and effort required for your CPA prep.
There are going up and down in life – think of climbing mountain. Now you are going through your hard time. Once done with it, you will get compensated for it, and become a stronger person.
Hope this helps, and feel better.

AnonymousInactiveOh shoot, I'm so sorry! And congratulations! Hmm, bad combo in the same paragraph, sorry.
I tend to wing stuff. So, while it may be a bit messy, it usually gets done.
My mom had four brain tumors and I wish I'd have said what needed said. If it was me, I'd say what needs said. Hug him. Spend time with him as much as you can and learn what you can at your new job. Then, study in your spare time. If a week before the test gets here and you really feel like you need more time, push it out. It's only $35 to reschedule if you do it at least a week out.
Like I said, I wing stuff a lot. With three kids and a hubby that runs his own business, we never know what's going to happen til it does. So, being flexible is crucial.
My heart goes out to you.

MaverickMemberSorry to hear about your dad. I have you and him in my prayer.
Congratulations on your job…but, again, sorry about your dad. Only advice I have is to pray and ask God for guidance and strength.

AnonymousInactiveI know my words don't mean much, but I am sorry about your father's situation.
You have to realize that some things are just not in your control, and keep your eyes on the end goal.
If I were in your situation, I would look at how much study time I have sunk into the next exam at this point and go from there.
Again, such events in life are extremely difficult to deal with, but I hope you find the strength to keep on truckin' on.

snoop146290Memberwhen you do start to get back into studying, i would recommend something i've been doing called the Pomodoro technique.
It's just a little mind trick. Basically you start a timer for a block of time (typically 25 minutes), and you tell yourself you will devote the entire time to sitting down with the materials and studying. For most people, that just means no side conversations, internet browsing, checking e-mails/texts. If necessary, someone that really has some heavy issues might be able to focus through, when you commit to beginning the 25 minute timer.
Your mind might wander off on the first or second one, but on the third one if i have a long day of studying, by then my focus has increased dramatically and I get into a good groove.

WICPA06MemberDefinitely take the time to be with your dad/family. You will never get that time back, so studying for an exam is not necessary. The time will come when you can start studying again, but family is most important. I would never sacrifice family time for studying. Granted I have studied longer than others, but I will never lose spending time with family over the cpa exam. It's just an exam. Who cares if you are a cpa in 3 months or one year. You will still be a cpa one day. You can never get that time back with your family.
Congrats on the new job also!
