Just curious as to how far in advance everyone starting studying for FAR. I plan on sitting for FAR sometime in the middle of July and I am trying to determine when I should really dig in to the material. I have heard that if you start studying too early that it become counter-productive for retaining material come exam day.

Thoughts?

I knocked FAR out in 3 weeks – started studying 2/7/16 and took exam on 2/29. I'm probably an outlier though – FAR was my last exam and I also have 9 years of work experience (in tax). You don't mention if you are in school or how demanding your job is, but I'd say since it's your first exam, you should give yourself at least 8 weeks. When I first began studying BEC (my first exam) it took me several days just to get into a good pattern and figure out which techniques work best for me. Even though I didn't, I think it's a good idea to start out with a study plan but you will adjust it as you move along, and certain topics take you longer or shorter time to go over than you originally expected. I'm working as a seasonal preparer in a local firm right now (position will end within two weeks) but I will be starting full time in August-September in a larger firm. I am also taking classes online to finish my 150 (will complete by May 1st). One of my biggest concerns is that I will be travelling abroad for 13 days in the middle of May and I really don't want that to disrupt my study schedule if I start studying before then.

Afraid that will cut things too close if I start studying after that trip…

It's counterproductive only if you study some material now and don't plan on looking at it again until months later.

The process will be a lot easier if you at least start working through the first few chapters. That way, when you finally buckle down and start an intense study regimen the material you already looked at will be review.

If you're full-time, I wouldn't do more than 3 months. Either way, stretching more than 2 months, you need to make sure that you're reviewing the material daily. Because you will forget.

Tyler, do you think you will have any time at all on your trip to study? Flashcards and online lectures would be the way to go. I used my kindle to listen to Roger lectures at the gym and it really helped. That way you can take advantage of downtime without having to drag any books with you. I also agree with Hasy – be careful not to give yourself so much time that you forget things. The longer window you give yourself, the longer you have to give yourself to review.

3 months is the ideal time to study in my opinion. Use the first 1.5 months to learn the material and the second 1.5 to review heavily and memorize. The last 4-6 weeks (6 for FAR) study for minimum 3 hours a day. That's my two cents.
