Our value does not come from our skills and abilities, as good as they may be; it does not come from our GPA, our job, a promotion from that job to a better job, our success on the CPA exam, or anything of the like; but our value comes from the fact that we have a Creator who loves us, cares for us, and desires to help us navigate the rough waters of this life in a way that provides security, hope, and true, everlasting joy while we anticipate the life to come, with Him.

I certainly do, big fan of comedy in fact. I suppose it's just different types of comedy from what it was when I was a teenager. Sorry for being so dry.

I'm a licensed CPA, not a candidate (some of us do act like 15 yr olds).

If you want real advice- merely telling your boss you have another offer wont get you anywhere but fired down the road.

If you need the money, but would like to stay you should attempt to negotiate an increased salary on its own merit and not waive another offer in your bosses face. Use objective data and present your accomplishments.

If it doesn't work, accept the other offer and put in your two weeks. Also, consider dusting off the old flaming bag of dog shit at this point as well.

DON'T ACCEPT A COUNTER OFFER! The water has been muddied at this point.

Sounds like you're trying to play a game with your current employer. This typically never works out well in the long-run. Did you only interview with another company so you could come back and ask for more money?

I agree with Bill. If you accept a counter offer after all this plays out, the short-run will be good. The caveat is you will end up stunting your earning in the long-run. They're going to second-guess developing you further because you've already proven your loyalties are not with them, its with the dollar.

How do you give the letter? Do you just drop if off in their inbox….or awkwardly present it to them and say read?

You would want to put it next to the bag of poop so it doesn't burn. But you don't want to put it so far away that they don't see it as well as too close that it burns

I made the mistake once of stapling it to the top of the bag, thinking they would stomp it out before the letter burned.

    ajones-

Classic mistake. The offer can't be affixed to, or in contact with the poop; however, it should be close enough so that the boss goes, “Look at that offer near the flaming pile of shit. Someone give this man a raise!”

I have always presented the letter in person as I told the manager that I was resigning. Basically the letter will say the same thing you're saying out loud, but to just leave it in their inbox or send them an email isn't as personal and not my preference. So, depending on the manager, I'd either say “Hey, I got to talk to you, when are you free?” and schedule something, or just go to their office, ask if they've got a minute, and then say something along the lines of “I've got some news…I've accepted a job elsewhere, so am resigning. I'm planning to work till [date]” and then from there the conversation will flow into what needs to be done before you leave, likely some polite questions about your new job, etc. Don't count on the counter-offer, and rarely ever would it be advisable to accept it if offered.

I had one job as a student that I emailed my resignation to my boss, which was a very bad thing in that situation because we were way too close to send it via email. 😐 After the trouble that caused, I've stuck to having the written letter for record purposes and delivering it in-person with my “Hate to leave you, I've loved being here, etc etc” speech.

@mla That is an awesome suggestion – I might have some people I need to go visit…

Walk into your office and say . . .

“Ladies and gentlemen, may I please have your attention. All those who still plan to be working here after 2 weeks, please remain seated. Everyone else, please do the Macarena.” Then proceed to play the song on your phone and burst out in dance.

Yeah definitely give notice in person and have “the talk”. Quitting via email is super disrespectful. After I told my boss I was leaving I followed up with an email later that day saying , as discussed yada yada yada. My last day as needed will be 5/15.
