I’m assuming there are people out there that have tried, has anyone been successful?

Per my research you may receive unemployment if you have “good cause” to leave your job, amongst some other things.

For those of you who have tried this what have you said/ not said?

Any input is appreciated, thanks for your help!

Back in 2010, it would have been great to study with no job. You know what? That's exactly what kind of happened. One week before I took FAR, I was laid off from my job. I did get one month's severance which was nice of them. Unfortunately, by the time I finished FAR, I was stressed to the max. I tried to study for REG and took the exam even though I wasn't ready and of course failed. Burned out! Three and a half years later I'm back to studying. This time I have a full time job, a bookkeeping business, and an 18 month-old who is high energy. I'm psyched and ready to go this time around and I will finish.

I think you should study and work and the same time. If you thrive on challenges, then this would work for you. If not, then maybe you need to do what you want to do. That's if you are living off your own money. Frankly, I think studying with no job will leave too much time to doddle. I think it will be hard to study 8-10 hours per day and then you'll spend the rest of the time sleeping and vegetating in front of the TV watching talk shows and eating tubs of ice cream. At the end, your brain will be soft and you'll be 10 pounds heavier with no CPA license to call your own.

Keep your day job and study. It's not as hard as you think.

    AUD - 10/21/16 (75----07/2010 expired)
    FAR - 10/28/16
    BEC - 11/2016
    REG - 01/2017

OP – you will not be able to draw unemployment for quitting your job. They will contest the claim stating that you were not FIRED. Leaving a job is considered free will for the most part, with the exceptions of course. Seasonal work qualifies for unemployment because you are laid off for a period of time. Life is full of choices, and it is up to you to make the right ones.

    CPA EXAM: DONE!!!!
    Ethics Course: Passed
    Application Mailed: 3/16/15
    Professional Conduct Exam: 97
    Certification Date: 4/2/15!!!

Like many others have stated, you can't quit your job and get unemployment. You have to be fired or laid off. They can also deny your claim if your were fired for certain reasons, like theft, drugs, didn't make it through your probation period. Also, the maximum amount of benefits you receive depends on the state you live in. Your state benefits only last about 6 months before they switch to federal benefits, which is usually much lower. Also, I never heard if they extended the federal benefits. They were supposed to expire December 28, 2013. My husband was laid off from Hostess at the end of 2012. He didn't receive unemployment until May 2013. He got injured on the job, right before their closing, so it was a big mess. He didn't even get the knee surgery he needed until July 2013.

    REG - 64, 72, 81!
    FAR - 77
    AUD - 79
    BEC - 72, 79! And Done!

Yes some insight to collecting benefits… Expect to get your first check TWO or THREE months after you initially file. They will conduct an interview with your employer and then yourself after. Theres no way youll be accepted benefits if you quit to study. Your employer has to lay you off or fire you.

I think whether you can get it or not depends on which state you are in…in my state, your employer will get a letter from the state confirming that you worked there. The employer will also get a chance to dispute your claim.

When I was let go last year. My boss told me that they would still sponsor me for my CPA and that I would have no problem with unemployment claims. It is best to talk to your boss about this at your exit interview.

    REG: 86 8/3/13
    BEC: 85 8/31/13
    FAR: 87 10/27/13
    AUD: 90 11/30/13
