beastmodeParticipantVery gloomy and rainy day and I cant focus for some reason so I thought about starting a thread about why is everyone going through this hell to become a CPA?
Give me three reasons. IF you dont have three just give me one! =)
I think Im looking at it because of the prestige it brings and also because of the opportunities to move up.
I’d love to hear yours!

SnausagesMember1) career enhancement: I work exclusively in business turnarounds, cashflow optimizations, valuation and M&A. CPA is a prudent designation to complement my existing academic and professional certifications (CFA, CMA, FRM, ASA).
2) networking: CPA is a great networking tool (as is the CFA (and others)). I can't tell you how fun it is to meet others with similar aspirations in career and academia.
3) academic: it's always good to have another tool in the toolbelt, especially in this competitive world. but it also serves well establishing credibility in current and future academic and research work that I will be doing.

pinkpink114Participant#1- I have a staff accountant that works under me. He is terrible. Constantly askes if he needs to debit or credit an account, can't figure out how a checking account works, etc… He annouced his plans to take the CPA exam. I thought “if that knucklehead is going to try…So I am”

jayelcee85Member1. I can't ask my children to go any futher than life than I have, so I'm trying to set the bar high.
2. I have found NO work in the Atlanta area for entry level accountant with no experience.
3. I'm not going to lie, the adrenaline of prepping for such big tests is a good rush!
4. If you asked me to draw you a picture of a CPA, I'd simply draw $$$.
That is all! 🙂

AnonymousInactive1. To become more financially capable of taking care of my wife and children.
2. To obtain greater career stability and growth potential.
3. To be a positive influence to my children.
4. To accomplish a dream I have had since I first stepped into an accounting classroom.
5. To prove to everyone around me that you can do anything if you have determination.
That's more than 3 reasons, but these are the primary reasons I WILL PASS the CPA exam.

KasiaSParticipant1. To prove to myself that I have it in me to accomplish something at big as passing the CPA. If I can do this, there isn't much I can't do.
2. To take my old boss's job (controller) the moment he retires. No joke. I worked for him for over a year and it was not a good one before I transferred to a different dept. He's due to retire within the next few years so I want to position myself to take his post. It's a cushy job and I would LOVE to see the look on his face when that would be announced!
3. Job security – to an extent a CPA will guarantee me work. Above all, I need to be able to provide for my family in the future. This is the best way to ensure I will always be able to do that.

3. If my husband can do it I surely can do it….
4. When/if I become a stay at home mom I will be able to make reentry into the accounting field much easier and with less hesitation that someone that doesn't have a CPA.
5. It will prove to my son that when you want something bad enough you work your tail off to get it…and don't give up on yourself…it isn't an option.

kandisjoyParticipant1. It's been a personal goal ever since I chose Accounting as my major in college
2. I can say I'm a CPA rather than an “accountant,” which could be confused with bookkeeper.. no offense to bookkeepers but I've worked too hard to be confused with that.
3. More $$/career advancement
4. More stability and security
5. My employer wanted me to
6. Respect from community and peers
7. If I decide to be a stay-at-home mom someday, it will be easier for me to start up my own side business from home with the CPA designation
8. If I can do this, I can do ANYTHING

HumanPiranhaMemberSo when I go to parties or meet people in social situations and people ask if I am sitting for the exam/have my license I will say “Yes, as a matter of fact, sir, I am indeed a certified public accountant.”
And because it is embarassing to explain the latest excuse for not sitting for the exam.
