Focusing to much on memorizing everything?

So I feel part of my problem with studying for these exams is that I’m trying to know absolutely every line in my Becker books mainly because “they say” if its in Becker’s book, it could pop up on the exam so literally every line I read I’m saying to myself “write that down that could be a MCQ” so when I look over my notes, I basically have the full text in my handwriting with a few exceptions….. Did anyone else find this happening to them and/or how did/could I break this habit? I’m trying to focus the majority of my time on the major topics of REG right now but I can already tell that I’m making mental notes in my head to re-read multiple paragraphs of minor information just because I’m saying to myself that could be the difference between Pass or Fail.

    AUD: (65)(66) 77
REG: (66) (48) destroyed me mentally.....
    FAR: (68) (66)(69)(71)
    BEC: (63) 75

OP- That is precisely what I made every effort to avoid. It is not practical to do memorization because for one, it is impossible to do so due to the massive amount of information, and two, understanding the materials trumps memorization any time. There are so much variations on how a topic can come up on the exam that understanding the topic becomes more crucial than just flat out memorizing the book.

    Good luck to you!

    REG-89 (08/26/13)
    FAR-91 (10/28/13)
    BEC-87 (11/25/13)

Perfectionists will struggle with the CPA exam. You don't need to understand every exception to each exception to each rule you see. You will not finish in time. It's nothing like a mathematics test in high school where you got a test on EVERYTHING in a chapter. You need to know enough to get a 75 (unless you're shooting for Watt Sells award).

@Fuzyfro89 I love that analogy “don't miss the forest for the trees” that perfectly applies here. Thank you both for giving your input, I just always have that fear that because I overlooked something in the book, I'll fail the exam. Goign forward, I'll attempt to stick strickly to main areas of the exam.

I also have a similar habit. At one point i told myself to stop writing down everything and wrote down only the main points that i think i should focus on. Then i did a lot of MCQ. I think MCQ in WTB is really good. Some questions are about the small topic that i did not care for. If i got those small topic questions correct, then i move on. If i got them wrong, then i would read the book again on that topic and write the note about it. You can do it! Good luck!

    BEC - 10/1/13 PASS
    REG - 12/6/13 PASS
    FAR - 1/21/14 PASS
    AUD - 2/27/14 PASS

I think tax is 20% understanding it, 95% memorization with some overlap.
