Greetings –

I’m in need of some advice on improving my reading. Sometimes I have to read a paragraph, sometimes even a single sentence, several times before it finally settles. And even when it does settle, there’s no guarantee I’ll retain the information.

To those that did well on their exams/are doing well on their exams, what is your approach to reading the textbooks? What techniques do you use? How much did you read per day?

I personally took notes in a way very similar to Cornell note taking. The main thing is that you should be able to summarize what you have just read in your own words. You should also be able to come up with questions to quiz yourself on the material you just read and took notes on. Before I did any homework questions, I had already quizzed myself on a lot of the material by forming my own questions while reading. I was rarely under 70% on my first run through each homework section in Becker using this strategy because I had already anticipated what the questions could be. I also used to be a math teacher, so I am pretty used to being able to create my own quizzes and tests.

I actually don't really read but I go overkill on notes. Don't quote me on this but I think there's some study out there that you only retain about 10% by reading but 50% of what you write. Of course, everyone is different.

I also found it helpful that when I am doing the homework to keep my notebook out with me. If I get to a question and become a dear in headlights I'll find it in my notes. It was a way to cross reference concepts that I learned and realistically knew to become familiar with how they are questioned.

You are just not that into reading, and neither am I. Other than glancing at the section after I have completed viewing a given lecture, I did not read the text. Your energy and attention are finite, be careful what you do with them!

What killed me on the exams was that I did not read what the question was asking. So I did have to get really good at reading the questions, by taking notes on questions I missed on MCQ drills.

echo what omalley said your time is limited find what works best for you. personally i didnt pick up a book and passed all four sections by doing a lot of MCQs and simulations
