Do you brush off a complicated topic, or stick with it untill you get it?

    I’m using CPAexel. I’m currently on the “Dollar Value LIFO” section. CPAexcel suggest that the “Estimated Average Total Study Time” for this section is 21 minutes.

    I don’t see how that can possibly be. This is a complicated multiple step formula. And that is just memorizing the formula, not even the theory behind it. I’m got the basics notes down. Why its used, simplified formula, but I just feel if I spend more than an hour on this topic I’m spending too long. The NINJA notes don’t even mention it once.

    I’m going to stick with my notes, move on, and come back to it after I’ve gotten through all of the material,

    Who else feels the same way? Do you have a different topic like this one you feel the same about?

    BEC - [08/31/2014 --> 86]
    AUD - [11/24/2014 --> 88]
    REG - [02/14/2015 --> 92]

    Wow, I spent a lot more than 21 minutes on DV LIFO. It was a hard topic for me.

    I'm curious, can anyone learn DV LIFO that quickly?

    What I've learned from my fails is, don't rush. Take the time to learn everything, especially what I struggle with.

    With FAR, I made a huge effort not to move on until I felt like I understood the topic at hand. It took forever!

    I'll find out by the end of the week if it worked…

    BTW, my hard topics were: bonds, ratios, & equity method (I really regret not taking the time to really learn it last summer). I even tried to rush through journal entry's and T-Accounts, but that was a mistake.

    R - 33, 58, 73, 69, 81!
    F - 47, 78! 🙂
    After 3 long years, I'm finally DONE!
    I could not have done it without NINJA MCQs.

    There are a couple topics that I skip, but very few. If you skip something, you have to know you are going to pass the exam without it. I'm sure no one sits for the exam (unless you are going for the Elijah Watt Sells Award) believing they know everything. I see no reason to get a 100% on your exam, but make sure you have a 5-10% buffer in case you misread some questions. But you already knew all that. Good luck!

    I skipped intercompany transactions but only because I wanted to wait until the very end to go over them. They're really confusing to me so I decided that once I got through all of the material and know all the journal entries, I might understand them better. I wouldn't recommend skipping a section altogether though. FYI- I struggled through FIFO, LIFO, and Weighted Average and also capitalization of interest expense and found some really great youtube videos that explained the concepts far better than Becker did.

    BEC: PASSED [83]; Expired, retaking July 11th
    REG: PASSED [83]
    FAR: FAILED [64]; Retaking May 23rd

    I had problems with $ value LIFO, Rogers just glides over it. Had to find additional explanations using Google. 21 min. would not be possible to me.

    FAR
    AUD 02/10/14 passed
    BEC
    REG

    I never just skip a topic I don't understand, that's why I don't have a set number of hours I should study. If I need it put in extra time to get a topic than that's just what I need to do, otherwise is just haunts you!!!

    I'm pretty sure most review courses will tell you it is better to know a little bit about many topics than a lot about a few topics. If you had to master every single topic in FAR the study time would be endless. i.e. spend some time but not too much time on very specified topics that won't net you many points.

    I've just done enough on most topics to feel comfortable in answering questions. One exception I had was the DRD in relation to deferred income tax. that took me a little bit AND I can't say it got me a lot of points.

    AUD - (74),78
    BEC - 85
    FAR - 86
    REG - 84
