So I have read amazingly motivation stories of people who have survived taking these exams through life’s hiccups/stress/deaths. However, I am now faced with the last of those 3 in the family. My grandmother, whom I am VERY close with – although she lives in another state so we don’t see each other often enough – was just diagnosed with small intestine cancer.

We don’t know the details/type/stage/prognosis other than “it’s not good” with the words “spread” and “lymph nodes” thrown in there. The oncologist won’t be able to see her until tomorrow but I am an absolute wreck. I came to my parents to study in quiet and was bombarded by this sudden news and now I can’t stop crying. She is invincible – she looks 20 years younger than she is, and has never had health problems. This just can’t be happening to her.

Long story short…I just can’t imagine how I’ll handle it if her prognosis is as bad as the doctors have implied. Not really expecting answers from everyone but more like I just needed to vent and get my emotions out in words…….

I was deeply hurt when both my grandparents died, mother's side, as they were both like parents to me. A cousin got diagnosed with cancer and ended up dying later. Brother diagnosed with diabetes, another one struggled with alcoholism. Those were just the tip of the iceberg. As hard as this sounds, I decided that feeling down wasn't going to help anyone. I did what I could to help but I also focused on moving on with life. It's easier said than done but you have to keep going.

Thank you all for your kind words and motivation. She had surgery today and it went well. We still don't have many details other than that, but I'm hoping in this case less news is good news!

Then to top it all off, I was picking up my son from a birthday party at the zoo…he had to stop inside the giraffe exhibit to go to the bathroom. As we're walking out, I go to open the door (which has 2 floor to ceiling glass panes beside it), and he was to my right slightly behind me, and walked THROUGH THE GLASS PANE with his head! shattered the entire thing, thinking it was the open door. Walked, not ran…and miraculously he didn't get a single cut from the broken window, only an invisible bruise and an on and off again headache. We can laugh about it now, luckily!

Here's to hoping Monday is the start to a much better week…

I just want to update you all since you helped keep me positive. My grandma got her PET scan results today, and while it is stage 4, and has spread a little to her bone marrow and other areas in her stomach – if she does 6 months of 3 day per month chemo treatments her remission prognosis is at least 80%!

She has scheduled her appointment, but isn't sure if she will do it or not. Here's to hoping she will. I think I'm going to schedule a visit for the weekend after my exam (April 12th). I've always stayed with her, but maybe I'll stay at my cousins to not overwhelm her, unless she wants/needs help, of course. This exam is for grandma 🙂
