Crushed 3 sections. Why am I so nervous about BEC?

This might annoy some people but I’ve done well on FAR, AUD, and REG but for some reason I’m very nervous about taking BEC on Wednesday. The fear of failing and having to continue studying through busy tax season when I’m so ready to be done.

I’ve studied about the same and seem to have most of the math, econ and finance material down.

I have yet to practice writing the essays which I’m not sure will make a difference. I am worried about possibly running out of time and having to rush through these. I’ve heard most people say that the technical details aren’t what’s important. How true is this? Seems to me its pretty hard to write a memo when your not informed about the material. Do many people spend much time practicing these? My plan is to write 3-4 the day before just to get the flow and organization down.

I’m having a difficult time memorizing all the COSO, COBBIT, IT, and other small memorization topics and I don’t want that to keep me from passing. So ready to just be done with it.

Don't worry. You will be absolutely fine for BEC. If you are a native of this country (which I am assuming you are just based on your well-written post), you should be able to handle the writing section with ease. Just know how to structure a memo and stay on topic and you should ace it. Much of the BEC multiple choice will be random questions that you've never seen before, but those could be pre-test ones. I got about 10 of the 72 and still did fairly well.

I'm in the same position as you with my last exam right before busy season – theres nothing to fear if you continue to take care of business like you have with your past exams… just get it F'ing done!

Don't sweat the written communications – as mentioned above they are very simple if you are a native english speaker. I probably practiced 4 or 5 – just to get a feel for them and to practice on timing.

    FAR - 7/1/13 - 98
    AUD - 8/31/13 - 94
    BEC - 11/23/13 - 89
    REG - 1/13/14 - 86

I'm in the same position as you… I feel fine on everything except IT and the WC is just now making me feel even more nervous. I just did a couple practice ones and found it difficult to find a lot to say about something I am not familiar with. After doing a few of them, I am aiming to 1) answer the question they ask/stay on topic and 2) try and find as many “buzzwords” as possible.

I have no idea what I am going to do about IT, at this point I feel like the reason I pass or fail will have to do with how lucky I get with my pull of IT questions… :

Hopefully we both get a passing score in February!

I felt pretty good during the BEC exam on MCQs but felt awful in my responses on the WC. I didn't leave myself enough time and just rambled through them with–what I considered–pretty shallow responses to the questions at hand. On top of the elementary nature of my answers, I was also unsure whether I was technically correct from an accounting perspective or if I was just blowing smoke (probably the latter). I walked out of the exam worried and upset about my WC; hoping it wouldn't tank my score too much. In the end, my score was much better than I'd feared. If you know the material, you'll be fine. I didn't study at all for the WC, but I think A71 is great practice at honing your writing skills.

The MCQ are worth 85% I believe so don't rush through them. If you know enough information to do well on MCQ you should be fine with the written part. As everyone said, be familiar with the general form of the written communications and practice a few if it makes you feel more comfortable.

I ended up rambling on two out of three of the WC and just tried to get in as many related key words as I could. I'm sure they read horribly unprofessional, but I did well enough to pass. Just take a deep breath, it sounds like you are doing all the right things.

the last section is a total mind game regardless of which section it is. You don't dare entertain the idea of having your life back quite yet and don't know what to do with yourself while you're waiting for your score because there is no “next section” to start studying for.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Mla speaks the truth!!! The last section is the worst, IMHO, from a mental standpoint. It's very painful to think you may have you life back and not see a 75+ on score release day. BEC is such an odd ball section too. If you are using Wiley to review, they have writing samples for each module that you can review to get a solid idea of what an exam quality WC would be. As long as you are concise, professional, and take care to mind your grammar you should be OK!

    Good luck!!!!
