CPA Review Lectures – I hate them

Anyone else zone out when watching (or trying to watch) lectures with their review material? It seems whenever I start a lecture, I magically zone out and my mind starts wandering, thinking about a million other things. I’m thinking that I would concentrate more and retain information better if I just read, take notes and do a lot of MCQ’s. Anyone else feel this way? Its like I’m concentrating more on finishing the lectures and taking notes than I am practicing questions and re-reading to retain materials. If I just use the Yaeger handouts, Ninja notes and Wiley, would that be enough?

I tend to get distracted by shiny things so I don't watch a lot of lectures. But everyone learns differently so find what works for you and stick to it! Good Luck!

Then skip them and focus on your text instead.

They were the worst part of studying for the exam, but it's so important. Although I've hard that Yaegar is 1000x more boring than Becker.

    @Kricket, LOL, shiny things 🙂

@Gina, do what works best for you! It must has been said gazillion times, but everyone is different and learns differently.

I'm a listener, and I couldn't go without lectures (in fact, I don't think I read any of my review books page by page, just watched my lectures, did the homework, referred to the text and took notes while working on the homework questions). Be flexible with your studying, just make sure you are actually learning the material. Best of luck to you!

I loved the Becker lectures and they were the primary reason for my success on the exams.

I do agree that everyone learns differently and you should find a review course that matches up with your learning style.

I can't stand the Becker lectures. It's pure torture for me. It's sad because I am sure part of the reason why Becker is so expenssive are the lectures. I am much more efficient reading the book and taking notes. When I was in college, I never learned anything from lectures. It was when I went back to my dorm to read my notes and text when I actually understood the material. Like Mini said, find what works best for you.

I have been taking tests on and off for 2 years now. Started with CPA Excel and bought an Audible book to listen to on my way to work. Then got the Cram Master test bank. In January of this year, I bit the bullit and bought RogerCPA review. I find myself actually laughing during the videos. Here are my results:

    11/09 BEC 75, lost it 🙁

    07/10 REG 71

    11/10 AUD 72

    08/11 REG 68

    bought Roger 01/12

    05/12 AUD 80

    07/12 REG 82

    11/12 BEC TBA

I love, love, love the Roger stuff, funny, interesting and he really breaks it down. Feeling so confident that I might actually be able to do this now.

I started out with Yeager because of all the great reviews I found online. I quickly realized Yeager wasn't going to work with my study needs. I, like Wendy, switched to Roger and am satisfied with the review. Don't get me wrong it's not just loads of fun watching the lectures, but I really feel like he makes the lectures as tolerable as it possibly could be. I watched just about all of his YouTube videos before I purchased to make sure I would like it. I feel like the lectures benefit me greatly. For my current study plan I watched the lectures one time, Read chapter, took notes, and worked the MC questions. I am working on my second pass through the material and I am rereading the chapter, rewriting my notes with my prior knowledge of the MC questions, and working the questions again. It seems like it is working for me. I only watched the lectures once unless I did not grasp something fully. If your learning method works best by reading then you may want to just use the Wiley books. It would be much cheaper! My friend passed all four parts only using the Wiley books so I know it can be done. I hope this helps and good luck!

I do well with the Becker lectures because I find them really easy to follow along with (e.g., taking you through the book, making notes, giving examples). I think I would have a harder time watching Roger or Yaeger or any of the instructors that stand in front of a white board. I think the structure Becker provides is one of the reasons people find their lectures so effective.

Me too! Hate the lectures & felt like it was a big waste of time. I only watched chapter 1 and half of chapter 2 of AUD before I said forget it and focused on reading the book instead. I was pretty nervous about it when I took AUD. but I figured I could always start watching them if it didn't work out. Well it's worked just fine so far. But I think my learning style just doesn't include lectures. I learn better by reading & doing. I also tried listening to audio in my car but didn't get a whole lot out of that either.
