I am new to this forum so please excuse me if I do anything wrong.

The reason I joined this forum is because I think I could use a community that understands. I am taking FAR for the 3rd time tomorrow and I just know I’m going to fail. My previous two scores were super low. I study but not consistent enough. For some reason I can’t bring myself to study some days. I get so drained from work and my own personal depression. Concepts just come and go so quickly. I feel like I spend too much time on a topic I don’t understand that I eventually just move on because I want to cover as much material as possible.

I started with Becker, but it was overwhelming for me so now I am on Surgent CPA. I don’t know what kind of a response I’m expecting from this post. I just wanted to share online because I don’t know anyone in person who would understand. Thanks for reading.

Xgrape, the forum is here to listen to you and encourage you. I'm sure most of us have struggled with burnout and maintaining motivation. Many of us have no one who would understand what we are going through and why. I can't advise you on your depression, although I understand.

I'm interested in which concepts you find too difficult to absorb. Did you not take classes that prepared you for this material? If not, that's part of the problem. FAR is, for me, the culmination of at least five classes. Nevertheless, you can't skip over topics that are difficult. In my limited experience (BEC: 80), it's most important to understand the concepts. If you don't understand and just try to memorize, you won't be prepared. I think Becker does a good job of explaining the concepts, but if you have questions, the forum is a good place to post them.

I'm having a similar problem with motivation right now. I am not the typical candidate; I went back to night school at age 54 because I wanted to accomplish one more big thing, and here I am at 57 studying like a 21-year-old. The thing that keeps me going is that I have told everyone I have an exam, and I know they will ask how it went, and I want to be able to tell them at some point that I passed.

Other people have different motivations, like the promise of a raise once they attain certification.

Please ask yourself, do you really want to be a CPA? You can have a great career in accounting without being a CPA. If you do, but just don't have the bandwidth to do it now, you can do it later.

I lacked motivation for a long time. Ultimately, I had excuse after excuse. Work was busy, I was sick, I had this going on or that going on . You need to look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself if you really want to be a CPA. What worked best for me was telling myself that “I failed” No one, or nothing, else was responsible. I am in complete control of my destiny and if I wanted to pass, I had to stop making excuses. Excuses made it so that I wasn't so hard on myself. BE HARD ON YOURSELF! Get this done, you can do it, but only if you want to! Only the hard working and dedicated candidates get trophies with this test.

solid advice from previous two posters. i dont have anything more to add other than reiterating the BE HARD ON YOURSELF part. I spent 10 years thinking id do this eventually, started studying then found something else to spend my time on as an excuse. finally cracked down on myself and had that look in the mirror moment a year ago and now im taking hopefully the final section next week.
