I’m getting ready to take the CPA journey and have a few questions. Any help that can be provided will be much appreciated.

1. In the current state that I live in (6 months), I am 3 accounting credits away from qualifying to take the exam. However in the next state over, where I use to live for 4+ years and might eventually move back, I’m already qualified. Does anyone see a problem with me applying for the CPA in that state?

2. Do I have to test in the state that I am getting my license? For example if I’m getting my license in Michigan, could I test in Indiana?

Brett, the answer to #2 is likely yes. You can transfer passed scores from most, if not all, states to another state. You will, however, need to pay a small fee. I would double-check with the board in the state where you'd like to get your license just to be sure.

I knew several people who drove to Utah to rake the exam if the local test centers were booked. They passed them there and they got licensed by Nevada.

where you physically sit for the CPA exam (aka which prometric center you are in) has nothing to do with where you “sit” (which state will give you a license) for the cpa exam. as long as i meet the requirements, i can be sitting for the CPA exam for the sunny state of Hawaii but actually sitting/taking the exam @ prometric in cold, snowstrucken NYC.

in short, physical location doesnt matter (barring any residency requirements) – as long as you meet the requirements for any state you can apply. license transfer fees are around four-$500 btw

You might want to check out whether there are any reciprocity requirements, also.
