CPA Exam Grading Question for SIMs

I have been searching for an answer to this everywhere but I haven’t found it yet. Hopefully someone here can help me! : )

Are you required to put an answer in every available box or drop down menu, even if the answer would be 0 or “no entry”?

For example a SIM on FAR that requires a journal entry. The program gives you 8 lines for drop down menus with 16 boxes for debits/debits (2 per line for each drop down) and the answer only requires 4 lines, what do you do other 4 lines and 12 debit/credit boxes? Do you have to fill in each box like this:

    Accounts Receivables $150K $0

    COGS $100K $0

    Sales $0 $150

    Inventory $0 $100

No entry $0 $0 –> for remaining 3 available lines

On one of my FAR Finals for Becker, it marked the boxes as incorrect when scoring for not putting in “No Entry” or a 0 for unused debit/credit boxes. However, on exam day, ONE of my SIMs provided an option for “no entry” for the remaining drop downs unused, and then another one DID NOT provide the option.

I found the lack of consistency unsettling and made me question my whole life at that second, haha.

Can anyone give me some guidance?! I have read that the exam is graded positively, so wrong answers don’t hurt you but I still would like to know what the expected response is!

    REG in 10 days!!

No. If you put a debit on a line, then you would not put a 0 in the credit box. When you finish the JE, if there are lines left then you should probably put “No Entry Required” in the next line only.

I don't think it hurts you if you put zeroes in the unused boxes. I did for FAR and still passed. There's another thread on here that discusses this topic. I think it's like “put in the zeroes?” or something like that.

    FAR 82
    REG 76
    BEC 71, 78 (There is a light!!!)
    AUD 69, 83 (DONE!!!!)

You should take the practice exam on the AICPA website. The SIM answers will show you how they are entered.

Good advice. I think the actual instructions are usually pretty clear like that. I remember being worried about that, too, and it all worked out okay.

    AUD 84 (1/9/14-Wiley books/TB + free materials)
FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)
    BEC 76 (10/5/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC)

This question has always puzzled me. They don't take away points for wrong answers. So you would think that leaving it blank or putting in zero would have the same outcome. Unless it's a calculation and the answer is zero, I don't see the AICPA giving you points for leaving it blank if the correct answer works out to zero. Even if the calculation doesn't work out to zero, I don't think there is any way they would give you points for leaving it blank.

In my opinion I think it's safer to put in zeroes.

However I have come across a sim with a drop down menu and “no entry required” was not an option. I was positive no entry was required so I left it blank.

Lol I have no clue what goes on though 😉 I have Reg in 13 days, gooood luck!!!!
