Considering the CPA exam again – thoughts?

I graduated with an accounting undergrad degree in 2009. I have since been working at a manufacturing company, first in accounts receivable, and now supply chain/planning. I took AUD in early 2010 and failed with a 68; since I wasn’t working in public accounting, I quit studying. A professor recently advised me that I should stop working towards my MBA and go back to focusing on getting my CPA license. I’m afraid that it’s been so long since I took classes and I remember absolutely nothing, will I even be able to do this? Does anyone have any advice? I don’t even know if I will ever work in public accounting.

    Thanks for your help,

    Lauren

I think one thing I would say–you can accomplish both the MBA and the CPA with Becker. I think the classes are with Devry ( I think Becker owns Devry or vice versa). But in the end you would have a Masters in Acctg and would be prepared for the CPA exam.

    Just a thought………..

A Macc is not the same as an MBA.

I think it depends on what your career goals are. Accounting Manager? Probably dont really need an MBA or a CPA. CFO/Controller? CPA!!!

    Business manager? MBA!!!

I graduated in 12/05 and took the exam last test window. If you study the material thoroughly, you can pass. Even though you don't know if you'll ever go into public accounting, I think pursuing your CPA is a good idea because it is a plus if you ever look for a new job. I've been looking for a job for the last month and I've seen numerous postings for non-public accounting jobs where CPA is either listed as a requirement or is preferred.

Lauren – I graduated in 2001 and I just started studying 3 weeks ago for the CPA exam. I took the exam a few months after graduating (the paper and pencil – gasp!), but never studied and didn't pass (not that I expected to). You can definitely do it, but I would recommend a teaching review course (i.e. Yaeger) instead of a “review” review course if the material is not fresh in your mind. Plus now that IFRS is on the exam, I don't know how much exposure you have had to those concepts.

It is definitely doable no matter how long you have been out of college as long as you have a basic understanding of accounting concepts.

@ Lauren. Ok guys lets tell her the truth. Lauren, there will be late nights, missed functions, angry friends and days when you think that you just cant take it anymore. However, it's challenging, invigorating when you get a concept, exciting when you pass an exam and the feeling you get when your done is just as intoxicating. It all comes down to this, HOW BADLY DO YOU WANT IT? Go for it Lauren. You will never know unless you try and I think that is the worse. See you on here CPA candidate.

I cant wait for this to be over.

I graduated in 1996 and I am taking the exam! 2009 seems super recent to me. I took the exam right after I graduated when it was pencil and paper. Back then I had a cd with MCQ's and that was it for study materials. I passed FAR and that was it and I quit trying. Now I am at it again. I feel like a lot of it is coming back to me. I have only taken auditing so far and FAR awaits me at the end of the month so we will see if I pass anything or not.

I totally agree with apbandj about taking a teaching course. I am taking Yeager and they are doing a good job of reteaching all of the old stuff and teaching the new stuff like IFRS. Like I said, I haven't gotten my scores yet but I definitely think you can do it! You only have 2 years of cobwebs to get out of your brain – I have 15 years worth!

Just remember having the CPA benefits an accountant in more ways than just in public accounting. Many jobs (even senior accountant positions) list the CPA as preferred-meaning all other things being held equal a person with a CPA would be considered for that position before a person without one. Now some of those private jobs also request public experience, but not all. It is a good competitive advantage, ESPECIALLY in a tough job market which is why I am pursuing it.

I graduated in 2005. I tested on two sections in October 2006, passed one and failed the other. I didn't resume studying until October of last year. I've been using Becker self-study.
