Just bought the Wiley CPA Review Book (Volume 1 & 2) and passed the exam that way? without any lectures.

I’ve been reading a lot on this forum, and many have said Becker just gives out all these mnemonics, and it kind of distorts the learning since you’re kind of just memorizing the mnemonics and not exactly knowing the material. Maybe it works for some people, but I’ve been failing, so maybe I need to change..

Also, Listening from the samples of the Ninja Audio..I kind of like it… Was considering getting the Ninja Audio.. U think this combo would be good? Just Wiley Text book/ MCQ and the Ninja Audio.. that’s it… Think I’m to the point I don’t want to watch Tim Gearty, or Peter Olinto lecture anymore.. I just want to study exactly what the exam tests.. so I would do MCQ, and if I miss it, I would go to the Wiley text (yes, it’s like a dictionary I heard)… and then just read and read it over until I understand..

    Any opinions?

Took 2 months for each, but that was on me (as were my 3 fails, those had nothing to do with the material I used and everything to do with not giving myself enough time.) if I had waited until I finished my masters and not spread myself so thin it would have gone a lot faster!

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Reading a textbook to pass the hard exam is not insane. Doing the opposite is.

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

I agree with tough kitty. Look up Lilla on here- she just read Wiley. I can tell you that yes the books are boring but they help you learn the material. Try not to look at the size of the books. Read 1 chapter a day & it's not so bad. I'm getting more out of the books than all my lectures.

I read the entire Wiley AUD book, and took notes on most of it. You have to set goals for reading the material. My goal was 20 pages a day during the week, and as much as I could read on the weekends. I also did ALL the MCQ's for each chapter after reading. Passed on the first go with Wiley, and Becker was definitly the wrong material for me. I do not use Video or Audio anymore. Just book, focus notes, and test bank.

    CPA EXAM: DONE!!!!
    Ethics Course: Passed
    Application Mailed: 3/16/15
    Professional Conduct Exam: 97
    Certification Date: 4/2/15!!!

I like the lectures, but I dont just sit I my couch and watch them. Before every example in the book, I pause the lecture and try to solve it before I watch Timmy G solve it. I pause constantly (if I need a second to write something down). I watch it for 30 minutes and take a break to move around. I didnt take the exam yet, but the end of chapter questions seem easy and I do well on the Wiley TB just from watching the lectures.

Im not saying this is optimal, I just wanted to give my take since many are saying the lectures didnt help them.

Try using the outlines that Becker provides. They are detailed enough, but concise at the same time. They were really helpful for me for REG. However, I'm not sure if there is a way to print them out though.

I normally make my own outlines for all of the material first. Then as I start doing the MCQ's I read the corresponding part of the outline first, then do the MCQ's and then re-read the outline again. Helps to bring everything together for me.

Also, I like pairing the ninja notes with the audio. I listen to the audio as I go through the notes and for me it has really helped nail the main topics into my memory. It's also really convenient as you get closer to exam time and want kind of a “full-scope” review of the topics.
