Can someone please help find a way to get research questions correct?

I wonder if someone has a method to get these valuable points from the research simulation. I got a 74 on FAR the first time around because i could not find the research answer. I took it again and got an 84,but did not get the research simulation correct. I just got a 72 on Audit and I got 2 research simulations ( did not answer them), I think NASBA wants us to get the research simulation correct, and they give more points to that part of the exam than we think. I heard the research simulation is only 1 point, but I dont think that is a fact, I think all simulations are all equally weighted.

If someone has a great method to get the research simulation correct, please share it with me. Im sick of failing with a few points shy of passing.

I do not have it on me but try the AUD Experience posts. I remember reading some general tips on how to search for key terms.

I don't have much experience yet, but the few that I practiced with FAR, I found the best way was to use the “Advanced Search” functionality.

Also, key into whether it is asking about how to record/calculate something or how/where it should be presented. That will help narrow down if you're in the right place or not.

    BEC - 02/21/15 - 82
    FAR - 05/29/15 - 82
    AUD - 07/09/15 - 93
    REG - 11/14/15 - 80

    All done!!!

For REG it was essential to be able to see a term and know which area of tax it was referring to so I could narrow the search down quickly to only a couple of main topics. The advanced feature is also essential. If you don't use that you could spend a lot of time reading stuff that has nothing to do with what you are looking for. For AUD I could put in entire sentences from the “off the wall” questions and find answers. I don't remember much for FAR, but I think knowing which area to begin your search is a big deal as well.

CPA Exam - Finally DONE (November 2014)
    BEC (08/10/13) 80
    AUD (08/24/13) 65 (11/13/13) 85
    FAR (04/12/14) 81
    REG (07/19/14) 69 (11/29/14) 87!!

Thank you all for the tips!

asimo, I could not find it on the audit experience.

mommyof3texans, I tried the advance search, but nothing, I think I get nervous when I dont find it right away during the exam.

With AUD you'll have to know which body of authority youll be searching through. You can then use the search within function to only search, say SSAE if the question relates to an attest engagment other than an Audit, and bypass the others like the clarified standards, SSARS, PCAOB, ect. to really narrow down the search results. From there if I am in the general vicinity of where I think I should be I drill down on the side panel of the standards and quickly read over the standards on the right side and end up finding it.

Keep practicing! Use 3-4 keywords and when searching pick the one that has the most keywords. When you think you found the answer re-read the question and compare with your answer. When I took FAR it took me 15 minutes to find the answer. The keyword(s) that worked were not even on the question. However the search within helped me find the answer.

Knowing what section an answer may be in will help narrow down where to look for an answer. An example would be a question asking about Fixed Assets presentation in the Cash Flows Statement. The search term “Fixed Assets” will turn up a lot of results but “Fixed Assets” and “Cash Flows” will narrow down the results enough that you can use some other terms in the question to narrow down what you are looking for.

It take a lot of practice problems to get the hang of them so hopefully you practiced before the test.

    Journey Started - January 2015
    FAR - 4/2015 - Passed
    AUD - 7/2015 - Passed
    BEC - 8/2015 - Passed
    REG - 11/12/2015 - Passed

Thank you all! I will follow each advice and will also practice a bunch of simulations.
