I passed BEC and AUD and my plan was to take Corporate Tax at my local university while studying for REG and take reg in the second testing window, then I would have 3 testing windows to pass FAR before I lose my first credit. Unfortunately I am not degree seeking and my local university stinks for that. They only offer the corporate tax class once a year and I couldn’t register until after it was already full. There is still a slim chance that I will get in on the waitlist, but it’s a SMALL chance. So here’s my question–how many of you that passed REG passed it without taking Corporate Tax? Should I just forget school for now and start studying for REG to take in the first testing window so I’ll have 4 testing windows to pass FAR assuming I pass REG on the first try or should I sign up for an online Corp Tax course to help with my studying. If I didn’t need 4 additional classes to be licensed I wouldn’t consider taking a class at all, but I was hoping to use that requirement to my advantage in helping pass the tests. Not sure what the best route is. I would appreciate any advice. I want to pass these last two on the first try and I’ll do whatever it takes to do that.

I doubt a tax class is going to help you pass the exam–I know that sounds weird but I think it is true. You need to find a review course that focuses on getting you to pass before your credits expire. Becker and Roger have for credit classes if you are in need of credits.

Studying for the CPA exam is much more intense and focused than anything you will get in a standard college class.

Thank you for your response. I know how intense it is to study for and the class would not be my sole source of studying. I plan to study for REG withe same review materials I used for BEC and AUD and with the same intensity. I had an audit course in college that helped quite a bit studying for AUD and I assumed that taking Personal Tax, Business Law I and II and Corporate Tax would help with REG. So my question again is for those that passed REG, do you think it would help to be exposed to Corporate Tax before I take REG?

I studied taxes in my BA program but that was even in a foreign country so the tax regime was 100% different to what we have here in the states, I did a little bit of taxes in my MBA program but it wasn't in depth like the CPA exam is.

We were basically taught simple tax calculations and that is absolutely no where near the amount of materials you need to cover for the REG section.

I dont have any exposure to taxes be it corporate or partnership but I was able to utilise my review course very well.

I'm currently working as AP and most of what I'm studying now doesn't even relate to my daily functions as AP.

If I can do this, you can do it πŸ™‚

    REG -63β”‚ 84!!
    BEC- 59β”‚70β”‚ 71 β”‚78!
    AUD- 75!
    FAR- 87!

Alright then I won't bother using one of the classes I need as a tax class. I'll just use those courses as “easy A” upper level accounting to meet the requirements since it won't help for the exam. I only wanted it as an added benefit in addition to my review course anyways. Thanks.
