I'm going to share my strong opinion on this, even though it's long winded and different than Jeff's 🙂
If you have anxiety about the test itself, practice tests are helpful. The best way to conquer a fear is to confront it.
I have high anxiety the week building up to exam day. I can't sleep, can't eat, and come to tears due to stress.
My personal experience, the practice exams help calm that anxiety. I don't take them a week before the exam, because I think a negative score can be harmful to my confidence at that point. So, my test is on 5/14: I will take a practice exam on 4/20, 4/27, 5/4.
It may be a waste of time for those that perform well under pressure. But for those like me (I think a part of my 3 failing grades was a lack of ability to handle the pressure) practice exams can be the key to success.
Not that any of us have time to read extra material. But there is a book by Dr. Marc Schoen that addresses test performance and performance under pressure. I listened to an interview he was in online and had a chance to speak with him about preparing for exam day.
I don't think I'll go into further detail. But the bottom line, is there are studies that prove practice exams to be helpful in many ways. Also, train yourself to delay gratification. You need to be able to handle the feeling of not knowing if your answer was right or wrong for a long period of time.
@Jeff, if you read this, I still think you need to listen to that interview. It's available online 🙂
