Are practice tests beneficial, or is it better to just bang out MCQs?

I’ve heard and have also had personal experience that practice tests before your exam just psych you out. My 2nd attempt at FAR is on 4/15, and I’m wondering if I should take a practice test today.

    BEC - 69, 66, 78 (exp), 82
    FAR - 69, 72, 66, 76
    REG - 64, 66, 72, 80
    AUD - 77
    Ethics - 95

I would say do what works best for YOU! I have never done a single practice test. I work all the MCQ's and then for review I work 30 question progress tests over and over again. If I feel like I need more work in one area I will go back and review that area. I like the progress tests because I get the feedback sooner rather than after a full exam.

Either way you go should be dependent on your learning style. FAR is a beast so make sure you understand the underlying concept and you will do just fine! I see you are a Controller so writing JE's shouldn't be an issue. Also, as the content guide for the exam shows it is virtually impossible to pass without a good understanding of Govt/Non-Profit.

    Good Luck!

    BEC-75!
    AUD-84!
    REG-78!
    FAR-83!
    Ethics-Passed!
    Experience-Got that too

@jsmithsae Thanks for the feedback. I do like the short progress tests better, so I think I'll stick with that.

Practice tests are helpful I think. I posed the same question, and most people said no to practice tests…

To each his/her own. If you are the type of person that won't get discouraged, then take a practice test. It will get you ready for the real thing 🙂

I had this same question! I have BEC this Thursday, and it will be my first exam sat for. I am using Becker materials and am only aware of the two practice tests on there, are there additional practice tests that I can take? I took those two and did well on them, and still feel like I'm not ready. Thanks!

I'm going to share my strong opinion on this, even though it's long winded and different than Jeff's 🙂

If you have anxiety about the test itself, practice tests are helpful. The best way to conquer a fear is to confront it.

I have high anxiety the week building up to exam day. I can't sleep, can't eat, and come to tears due to stress.

My personal experience, the practice exams help calm that anxiety. I don't take them a week before the exam, because I think a negative score can be harmful to my confidence at that point. So, my test is on 5/14: I will take a practice exam on 4/20, 4/27, 5/4.

It may be a waste of time for those that perform well under pressure. But for those like me (I think a part of my 3 failing grades was a lack of ability to handle the pressure) practice exams can be the key to success.

Not that any of us have time to read extra material. But there is a book by Dr. Marc Schoen that addresses test performance and performance under pressure. I listened to an interview he was in online and had a chance to speak with him about preparing for exam day.

I don't think I'll go into further detail. But the bottom line, is there are studies that prove practice exams to be helpful in many ways. Also, train yourself to delay gratification. You need to be able to handle the feeling of not knowing if your answer was right or wrong for a long period of time.

@Jeff, if you read this, I still think you need to listen to that interview. It's available online 🙂

If using Becker, I found that the practice tests are really hard so I waited until final review to take them…so I'd just practice with the regular Passmaster MCs over and over again until I'm getting very high scores on them, and then take a practice test or two 1 week or so before the exam. Sometimes my score on the Becker practice tests (simulated exam) would be 40-60% of them right, because they can be very hard.

I like to build my confidence with the Passmaster first, and read through the MC answer explanations slowly for each question (even the ones answered correctly) to learn why the right answer is right and why all the other choices are wrong. If you do a practice test early on, you might click submit on 90 MC questions and get a crappy score and just realize how much more stuff you need to go back and learn. Just what I found, but different things work for different people haha 🙂

I always do the practice exams because they contain new questions – I don't worry about my score though, just use the opportunity to learn a few new things (by reading the explanations of every question, even those I got correct).
