Application Fees and Such

I don’t think this goes against the rules since it’s public knowledge. Feel free to mod me if needed.

I’m from Oregon and after revisiting their site again, I started to wonder. From their website:

“Returning Oregon candidates will be charged a $50 Oregon Application Fee.

The application fees are payable to the Board of Accountancy and are not refundable. The Application Fee is not based on the numberof sections you apply for.

Candidates are also required to pay Examination Fees which include the computer testing charges, grading charges and administrative charges. The candidate pays the examination fee directly to NASBA according to a payment coupon that will provide instructions for methods of payment. Candidates must pay for all sections authorized on the ATT within 90-days from the date on the ATT.”

So in other words, if I wanted to save money, I should apply for my NTS for my other 3 sections right now and save me the extra $100 of application fees? (3 x $50) – $50. Is this a good idea or bad one? I do plan to take a section every other available month. Yet I don’t know my score yet for FAR, so if I applied, can I sign up for all 4 sections and just not pay the one for FAR later on if I discovered I already passed it. Does this go against the rules? I know it has this:

“NOTE: Candidates should ONLY sign up for the sections they are prepared to take. All sections authorized must be taken within 6 months from the date on the NTS (Notice to Schedule) and all fees to NASBA will be due. Examination fees that are paid to NASBA are non-refundable. If you do not take a section on your NTS your fee for that section will be forfeited. “

That 6 month window in order for me to take AUD, REG, and BEC is okay and fine with me. That’s my goal anyways. Actually, that’s more than enough time. The issue is probably FAR. Naturally, I want to retake it if I didn’t pass, but I won’t need it if I already passed. My brain is telling me: “Do I really forfeit it? That $50 can cover 3 other tests. Isn’t there more of a gain than a loss?”

Or is this just too much trouble in order to me to save $100?

    FAR - 62 (10/2/13), 50 (5/30/14)
    AUD - 73 (10/30/13), 66 (5/6/14)
    REG - 69 (4/8/14)
    BEC - 66 (2/27/13), 73 (4/21/14)

If you're not working and feel like you can do it in 6 months, it's a good deal. However, if you don't take a test within the 6 months, you lose the money

You can't reapply for FAR while you're waiting for a score. Oregon may be different but in most states if you try to pay for far you'll get a message that its unavailable to register for.

Personally I wouldn't register for 3 at once if your NTS is only good for 6 months. We all go into this thinking 2 mos per section is more than enough time to study but things do come up in life, and even the best laid plans go awry.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

@ Ntw6817: Yeah, but like I said before, that $50 will go towards more than 1 section. Regardless of whatever, I will take at least 2 section in the next 6 months. What do I lose?

@ mla1169: Hmm, even though you have a great point… how do I counter this? I'm planning to send the application by mail/hard paper format. I checked everywhere on oregon.gov/boa, but I don't see them having a part where I can apply via online. I heard that Oregon's BOA is one of the slowest due to snail mail. Maybe is the reason why?

Still wondering, what am I losing here? Do I get a fine/fee if I don't pay NASBA within the 90 days or something? What actually happens when I apply for NTS of a section, but refuse to take it/pay it later on.

Let's say this. I pay $50 in order to get NTS for 3 sections. Before 90 day is up, I decided to pay 2 out of the 3; thus not paying or taking the 3rd one. I would've $50 regardless of taking 1, 2, or 3 sections.

Is this just too much self justification on my part or is there something hidden that I'm not aware of?

I tried to save $50 by paying for all 4 exams back in 2011…Needless to say, I ended up wasting ALL of this money……so this time around I decided to waste $50 instead and have 2 NTS's – for 2 parts each. But decision is yours…….not sure how it works exactly with the snail mail…..

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14
