Hi all,

I started taking the exam several years ago, and never passed. Now, I’m looking to start back up. In between last time I was taking the exam, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. So, I must check my blood sugar, wear an insulin pump, glucose sensor, have access to food and my BG meter while I am testing in case I go low. I’ve read that this can be an issue since Prometric doesn’t allow anything in.

Anyone had experience with the ADA modification request? Specifically related the diabetes. A template that I could give my doctor would be great. I’m guessing that I would request access to the above items in the testing room and possibly more time. Thanks guys.

You should have no problems. Just call them a day before the exam, and let them know. I had heart surgery, and had to wear an electronic heart monitor for a month, and they let me take that in/wear it.

It's not a problem, I just showed them my insulin pump when they made me empty out my pockets and everything was fine.

I didn't need to check my sugar or leave at any point during the exam, so I can't help you out there. Just bring everything with you, keep it in the locker outside of the testing room. Hopefully if you feel yourself going low, you can finish that testlet and take a break and have access to whatever you need.

I would guess that the only part you might run into trouble with would be the extra time, since they are very loathe to grant additional time. Not necessarily fair, but a fact.

I would arrange for this well in advance, though, to discuss issues like if you have to stop to eat something in the middle of a testlet. I would guess that they wouldn't let you into your locker in the middle of a testlet, but with the right documentation may be required to let you eat something. However, they might ask that you have the food in clear baggies (no nutrition facts etc. that could be used for notes – people will do anything 😉 ) and that you leave them with the testing employees during your exam so that if you need something quickly, you can go to the check-in room and have them hand you your food which clearly has no notes in order to ensure you're not cheating.

If you don't think you would have to do anything mid-testlet, though, you're probably OK, like others have talked about. Not sure how bad your diabetes is to know how immediately you would need something! Between testlets, you're allowed to take breaks for as long as you like (but the clock keeps ticking) and get into your locker etc., so the original packaging wouldn't be a concern either.

I am pregnant and when i got to the testing center they let me leave a water and a snack in a baggy on the sign in desk and said anytime i wanted to just pop out to take a sip or something to eat. They were very nice about it. They didn't make me sign out because i wasn't leaving and they could see me the whole time. But I would check with your testing center as every center is different.
