Anyone Have a Significant Other Who is Also Testing?

    I am going on my 3rd year of testing after having lost my first two credits. I’m an unmarried, twentysomething who has serial dated during my studying. I met someone at work and we’ve been dating 9 months.

    He is two years my junior and just received his CPA license in the mail last week. He also started taking the exam AFTER I started, and yet, he finished the exam over a year ago. He passed 3 sections within 2 weeks of each other, and thought he struggled to pass his fourth section, Audit, after only 3 tries.

    Is anyone else dating/married/best friends with a CPA candidate or a newly-licensed CPA? How do you handle the competition or jealousy when s/he passes and you don’t? It can be so stressful when loved ones seem to pass so much easier than some of us, when we put in just as much, if not more, study time and effort. What gives?

    At least you have a SO that understands the time you have to study.

    “You already studied like 5 hours today.”

    OP… sorry I can't help you, but at least you have a SO that can understand what you're going through. I always thought it would be cool to be married to someone in the same profession, but I'm not sure I could handle being with another person who's as Type A as I am (and like most accountants I know are)! My hubby is a systems engineer, and he's always making fun of my “easy” calculation problems. He thinks all we have to do is add, subtract, multiply and divide while he's working with calculus and differential equations.

    That must be tough, I had a little bit of a different situation. I had a boyfriend when I started this process and he actually helped me get motivated to start this process. We were supposed to be studying together, but after months and months he said he hadn't been approved by the state board yet and I had already started taking tests. And since he wasn't studying too, like he was supposed to, he didn't understand how much I had to dedicate to this. And I started resenting the fact that he wasn't going through it too and he coud still have a life. Sorry to say but we ended up breaking up and then I found out he wasn't approved by the board because he didn't have enough credits and never told me.

    I think if he is at least supportive of you and not making you feel bad for taking longer than him to pass the tests then you are fine. If it's just you feeling jealous of him you just need to realize that everyone is different and you will get there too just like he did. That's just my two cents.

    @onmyway82

    You guys broke up because you resented him for that?? Harsh. And strange he didn't tell you about the credits.

    I know this is an older post, hope @montanagrizzlies sees this. I am also dating someone who is studying. He had a 3 year jump on me with the studying but didnt get really get serious until we realized we were serious about eachother. He has one test down, I have ZERO. I was happy for him when he passed his exam. I know how much he works at his job(traveling auditor) and I felt his time sacrifice when we didnt get to see eachother as much as I wanted. Its tough, but you gotta be there for eachother.

    I agree with @Onmyway82, make sure he is able to support you event though you arent done with your exams.
