Hi everyone:

I periodically read about people checking SIM answers through the AL (if it can be found), but am unsure what people are talking about. I have practiced research SIMs using the AL, but nowhere did I see where benefit can be gained on computational type SIMs. I don’t plan to hang my hat on the AL for the SIMs, but I was just curious what people mean.

Im having the same issue,I can never find any computational problem.

It can help if you can't remember whether or not to include certain items in the calculation, such as on REG. What section are you asking about?

FAR. I see people say that they have found complete numeric examples, but I have never seen anything of the sort. Just wondering what AL others were looking at. lol

I was able to find guidance on all my REG sims. Including a walkthrough of a specific computational problem (but needlessly complicated because it's written by the IRS).

I also used the AL for FAR – which reminded me that something was supposed to be deducted instead of added and saved me a math error. I can't recall the nature of the computation. But the AL did specifically say something like, “X is stated separately and then deducted from Y.”

But I've never been able to effectively do it with Becker – the AL isn't complete enough for that.

Ok, I'm not much help, then. I don't think I tried using it for FAR. I was tired of looking at the sims and hit exit with about 15 minutes left. But I still passed. (I think I did really well on the MCQs and muddled my way through the sims just enough.)

@impska: Thanks. I just knew I hadn't seen any “numeric examples” given in the AL, which is what some of the posts sounded like.

@kimboroni: I hear you. I have a feeling it won't end up being much use to me either, based on the time length and amount of material for this beast!

The AL didn't help me very much (read: at all) on FAR simulations, but I found quite a bit of helpful information in the AL for my audit sims. It seems the real key is being able to see a problem/question and being able to recognize the “call of the question” and know the terms that the AL would use for that issue.

The AL helped me on one SIM in AUD (two if you include research). Didn't do much for me in FAR, other than research.

I think it depends on the nature of the SIMs you are dealt. Some lend themselves better to verification than others.

My experience with FAR and AUD is that the AL is only helpful for the research questions (obviously). On FAR everything was something you had to calculate. On AUD everything was something you had to either calculate or answer specifically for the scenario provided. So I wouldn't count on it being much help to you.

the AL was crucial for my passing of the exams. You may or may not be able to find the specific problem/question you are looking for, but there is a good chance you can find direction-or even a specific illustration. I would practice using it while you are doing your practice sims, even if you know how to do them.

I remember for one of my practice SIMS they asked for diluted EPS. I didn't remember all the information needed, and I did not want to look in my notes for help. I searched the AL, and low and behold it was there. The AL even used numbers and examples to help solve.
