zenupe11MemberThe feeling of getting a 74 is one of the worse feelings I’ve ever felt! It’s torture! Anyone else that has dealt with this feeling, please help me with dealing with just being right on the door step of joy, but still in the streets of hell! How did you move on and what actions did you take to achieve that 1 point on your next attempt?
My first thought was, “Oh I’m gonna appeal this…” Has anyone had success in an appeal?

Yolie95MemberFirst: You aren't alone. Look at my track record. I just received another one of many “close” scores.
Second: Don't appeal. No one ever wins on appeal and it's a waste of your time and money. It'd be a better investment to resit for the test.
Third: I've got one more chance before losing audit. BUT in the big scheme of things – this is no big deal. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to pass this test. I woke up saw the 74 and cried. I've taken FAR three times since November 2012 and went from a 56 to a 73 *simply by adding NINJA audio. Still, a 74 on a test that I get to take over and over and over again – is no big deal. I can go into battle with this test until I pass. Some people are battling things in their lives that are far bigger and more life altering than this test. So while I know – NOBODY wants to hear this or read this (including myself) – the “woe is me” “my life is over” “this is the worst thing in the world” mentality won't do anything but slow you down in starting to study again.
Also, please note, while I'm giving you this little pep talk – its really more for me.

Yolie95MemberAdvice for moving past that 74:
1. Study like you've never studied the material before.
2. If you're really just using Becker, do as Jeff says and put the highlighter down.
3. Buy NINJA audio.
4. Listen to NINJA audio – but listen to the point where you are transcribing EVERYTHING that Jeff says. I seriously had Microsoft Word open on half my screen and iTunes on the other half. I would listen and type everything he said as fast as possible. When I got behind, or when I was a little confused I'd stop the audio, go back and listen to it until I got it all down.
5. At the very least read what you've transcribed WHILE listening to the audio. The more senses you engage in something the more likely you are to remember it. So listen, read, and, if you want, recite the audio.
6. Do multiple choice questions, but don't do them for just the correct answer. Read the reason the answer is correct and why the other choices are incorrect.
7. Think of it as a practice test. Before I started passing these things, I would stress myself out and walk into the test a nervous wreck. I passed my first part thinking “this is only a practice. In the past I've studied way more and failed – so this is obviously a practice test.” With that mentality, I've passed 3.
Hope this helps.
Don't give up.

zenupe11MemberThank you for the advise and motivation. I've gotten all of my sulking out and I am jumping back on the horse and going back at it! I definitely plan to supplement my studying with Ninja Notes, as I came up on this site towards the end of my prep for FAR. Hopefully that helps get me through the areas that I may be weak in. I've been advised that it would be best to stay with my exam order (scheduled to take AUD July 13th and REG Aug 26th) and will try to FAR inbetween. I'll be studying fulltime come mid-July (leaving my current firm for PWC) so I believe it will be possible. Again I appreciate the encouragement!

TncincyParticipantAppealing will not matter. Either you passed or you didn't. so don't waste anymore time with scores and waiting. The best thing you could do is accepted the 74 and get back to studying to pass. Maybe do a cram this time since the information is fresh. This is doable and we look forward to that passing score on the next round. You're so close…..git-r-done.
It begins with a 75
Been here too long as a cheerleader....ready to passJune 8, 2013 at 9:49 pm #421005
SonjaBlueMemberI got 67 the first time I took FAR and could barely believe it after all the “work” I put into studying. I went ahead and moved on to AUD (and passed) and REG (and failed) and BEC (and passed). At the end of each section, I couldn't bring myself to look at the material anymore; pass or fail, it was just too boring, my brain was “stuck” and didn't want to learn more material from the same section, and so on.
It really helped me (and suited my learning style) to take a second test covering different material right after my failure. Many people advised against this, because they said it wasn't “efficient” and that I would forget “everything” I learned and have to start from scratch when I went back to study the failed exam. They were wrong.
When I took FAR the first time, I didn't make any notes or summary review material to use right before the exam. Then I found this site and realized that wasn't actively engaged learning. I didn't put the highligher down; I still highlighted the sections recommended. BUT, I typed up notes from the highlighted material. Whether writing or typing or listening . . . find your learning style and use it to reinforce the material. At the end of AUD, REG, and BEC, I had 20-50 pages worth of material to read/review during the final week before the exam. I read that material every day for a week and did a practice set of MCQ's over all chapters for my final review each day. I passed AUD and BEC the first time using this method. I passed FAR and REG the second time using this method.
And, my plan wasn't inefficient for me. FAR – second attempt – I studied for one month – about 50 hours total – only on weekends and scored a 78. REG – second attempt – I studied for 2.5 weeks – about 36 hours total – 1 regular weekend and a few days off with Memorial Day Holiday (5-day weekend) and scored an 80.
Thirteen months – and I am done – don't ever give up! Figure out how you learn best and apply those techniques to this exam. You will pass this exam too!

lsutigers03ParticipantMy 74 is the worst grade I've ever received. Even if your grade is a 74 they should give you a 70 so you don't feel so awful.

JMember@lsutigers03 – Actually it is funny that you mention this (and not the fact that you received a score of 74; my sincerest sympathy for that)… in the “old” days of the CPA exam, it was impossible to get a score of 74, or any score between 70 and 74. If you were in that range, the test would be graded again until it came out to be either a 69 or a 75. Remember, this was back in the day when all tests were manually graded and left up to quite a bit of subjectivity (i.e. essay questions)

smp73MemberI agree the 74 is the worst grade in the book. I was crushed when I got a 74 on REG back in Q1.
My advice:
Let yourself be mad/sad/angry/etc this weekend
Re-group – remembember why you started this journey
Use that anger/sadness/etc to fuel your resetudying and you will knock it out of the park on your retake!

littlenumberrobotMemberI'm part of the 74 club. It hurts so bad I agree I would rather have seen a 70 or 72 than the dreaded 74. Ughhhhh. Hoping I can do what I did with my BEC 74, less than a month later I passed that one. I guess AUD is my beast. Lets shows those 74's who's boss:)

AnonymousInactiveAlso part of the 74 club, and not a membership you want to have. I took a couple days to regroup (and by couple, I literally mean 2 days) and jumped right back in. Don't study for “1 more point”, study for the whole exam again. When it comes to this test, 74 is probably the most painful thing that can happen. Just don't give up. Keep with it and you'll get your passing score.

June 10, 2013 at 11:32 pm #421014
IwannaBaCPAParticipantI too am in the club! It certainly sucked but at the same time, I am glad I didn't see a 70 instead. The 74 made me feel like all the work I had done was worth it and I was almost there. I did restudy all the material but with a focus on things I struggled with during the exam. Jeff's NINJA notes helped too – I really suggest buying them! When I retook it, I gained 7 points!!
Best of luck! You can overcome this minor set back.

AnonymousInactive@zenupe…this might make you feel better. I've been working on this exam for 5 years now. I got a 74 on what was supposed to be my last exam. Now, FAR has expired for me…for the second time! This is not my first 74 either, I got one on Audit a few years back. It's super frustrating, but there's nothing else to do but to get back in the books and keep studying! We will get done with this thing!!!
