I’m working for a non-cpa supervisor as an auditor for the state. I know you need a CPA to sign off for the audit hours once u pass the exam. Do the audit hours count if i work under someone who isnt a cpa?

Without knowing your state's specific rules, I can't say for certain. My state's rules say that the CPA signing off on the experience requirement just has to “be in a position to know.” My experience was signed off on by someone about 3 levels above me, but knows what I did on a day-to-day basis, and thus was able to sign off.

In my state the answer is yes the experience will count, as long as the CPA who does sign off is in a position to know that you have actually gained the experience. The company I work for had no CPA's until I became one, and never had a CPA at any point in the past. I was able to use the lead auditor, who had audited my work for 8 years, to verify my experience. So, the state worked with me but they still wanted a CPA who was in a position to vouch for my work to sign off on my experience form.

In my state there is a special exception for government workers where they don't require a CPA to sign off on the experience.

Basically what the others have said; varies by state.

In my state, CPA doesn't have to be supervisor or at same employer, just someone willing to sign (in my case, I worked at a small non-CPA accounting firm; next door was a small CPA firm; CPA next door saw me at work every day, had been over at times when he or my boss had a question they'd talk over, and seen me participate in conversations, etc., so he knew I really was working accounting even though he wasn't my supervisor).

I work for Federal Government. I had to find a CPA to sign off for me.

    BEC - 80 (07/2015)
    AUD - 74 (8/2015), 67 (11/2015), 74 (6/2016), 76 FINALLY (7/2016)
    REG - 84 (10/2015)
    FAR - 71 (4/2016), pending 9/2016

Thanks everyone. Another71 community is very helpful. Bless you all. I work for california state. Does the audit experience under the state count towards my audit hours for CPA license?
