So I was on NASBA’s website looking at score release timetables and saw a note underneath the table saying “New passing score will be set during this time frame”. Has anyone else heard about this? It would be nice if they lowered the passing score but knowing our luck they’d probably raise it.

I'm sure the passing score of 75 isn't changing or there would be 35 threads about it already on A71.

I saw something similar on the AICPA website and wondered about it as well. Maybe someone who has already gone through an exam update could give us some insight…

Q. Why will there be a score hold for the CPA Examination in Q2?

A. Anytime the CPA Examination undergoes significant changes, candidate performance must be statistically validated. This hold will allow time for the Board of Examiners to conduct its review process and set the passing score. Upon completion, the scores for all Q2 candidates will be released once.

It needs to be lowered to 71 so that A71 is named after a passing, not failing score.

Yeah really Jeff…just make '75' into '71'.

Even 75 is not “percent correct”. It's a mere relative number, algorithmically determined, indicating “the lowest mark for passing.”

What they need to do for the new exam, if the exam is more difficult, is just drop the standard a bit. BEC will have SIMs now and I know AUD is changing too.
So, they can always adjust the scoring methodology to allow for someone to get 75 who gets a lesser percentage of the test questions correct.
Something tells me that for REG and FAR, they're not gonna change the scoring weights. More TBS's on both will just mean less scoring weight on MCQ.
But, on another note, I hope they don't push through with locking each SIM after you work on it, and not allow for toggling back and forth between SIMs.
That would suck, and that will result in lower scores. Sometimes you need to think about certain harder questions (or let the solution come to the
front of your brain) as you complete easier questions. In the real world, you can toggle back and forth between things.

The strange thing is that the have only Q2 marked. Which tells me that based on Q2 test results they will establish the new passing score.

It would certainly be an extra middle finger to everybody if they made the exam harder and raised the passing score YIKES… lets hope it goes down though

I can't see a change to the score ranges happening. They can always calibrate the exam to keep the historic scoring intact.
