What is an "average" passing score?

Although the exam results includes a comparison (Candidate Diagnostic Performance Report) with others who also passed the exam, is there an “average” score of those who passed posted somewhere?

I received a 78 on FAR and 82 on BEC and I’m just curous how those scores stack up (low I’m assuming). I’d expect there would be the traditional bell curve of passing scores, with a majority in the 85 – 90 range, but that seems a little high given the discussion on this forum.

Not even close. Typical passing scores (again, not the majority but a fair amount) are in the 75-80 range. The higher you go from there is less and less likely. To give you perspective, if it were perfectly proportional in the passing range, then 75-80 would have about 20% of passing scores (5 point brackets). I can't verify this since AICPA does not release score percentiles, but I feel that more than 20% are in that range. A 78 is in the lower end of passing scores, and an 82 is definitely above average.

Keep in mind that the pass rates overall are about 40-50%. This includes 1st and xxth time takers. So pass rates are much lower for 1st timers. With your progress so far, you are right on track to finish out the CPA strong. Keep up the hard studying and you'll be great!

I bet that kind of info would be in that ridiculously overpriced candidate performance book that the AICPA releases. And I agree with See Pee A that the average passing scores are probably in the 75-80 range.
