If you ask anyone what is the difference between 75 and 74 they would say it is 1. With respect to CPA exams i feel the difference is more than 1. I have so far got two consecutive 74’s in AUD when i was sure i would pass. What is the significance of this 74?….74 is one mark where you cant be happy nor you can be very sad but its frustrating..so near yet so far.Your views please.

I just got a 74 on BEC and I feel like I'm so close I hate that I have to wait until April to retake. I had lost credit for this and hadn't taken it in two years. That is what makes me proud of the 74. Nonetheless, here I am with a FAIL next to my exam name…

I feel 74 could mean you might have got 75 or more but has been moderated to 74 due to passing cut-off. Only the top performing candidate pass.. Their cut-off is always around 41-59. If 65% achieve the threshold, assuming the passing cut-off is max of 59%, the rest 6% are given 74. Thats my opinion. Hence, in CPA aim to get 90% to ensure that you pass with a 75% in a worst case scenario. CPA exam is very competetive………

I think it means if you had gotten one more MC question correct that you would have gotten a 75. I know that is a horrible thought. Everytime I do practice MC I pretend like the last 2 or 3 questions are dependent on me passing the exam. The only way to overcome is to put in the time and literally do 1,000 – 1,500 MC questions in preparation for each exam.

It requires time commitment and a lot of study and sacrifice and then you need some luck too.

I have also gotten two consecutive 74's on AUD. I know…I can't even describe in words the pains and frustrations. I'm not sure about the exact science as to what is the difference b/w a 74 and 75 but they need to make a cut somewhere unfortunately. For me the biggest thing in AUD is to read the questions and all the answer choices carefully. Based on your score, I'm pretty sure you know the material well enough, and it's just a matter of one or two questions that you might have slipped on because you may not have read through the questions AND answers carefully. Go at it again and develop a habit of really reading through the questions and answer. Even if you think you know the answer already.

Someone posted an interesting theory once. It went something like this. Let's say there are 6 major topics in the MCQ section you're taking and you do perfect in 5/6 but get 0 right on the last topic. Well then even though mathematically you should of got an 83% you will only get a 74 because you have to hit a certain level of proficiency in every topic. So the person who gets 75% in all 6 topics will get the 75 to pass because he hit the minimum requirements for each. And that's why those stupid fail reports are broken down the way they are by topic. This is pure speculation and I have no basis for it but it sounds totally plausible to me. I would expect the AICPA to want you to have a certain level of proficiency in every topic of FAR, REG, etc.

FYI: It has NOTHING to do with some arbitrary bell curve set by the number of people who pass the exam in your testing window.

A 74 could mean (as it does for me) that you studied your butt off, know enough to pass, but are a horrible test taker. Some of us can't even remember our name when the clock starts ticking.

I just got a 73 in REG and thought for sure it was because of the SIMS. I got my score report and I scored weaker in MCQ and STRONGER in SIMS! It makes sense though because I've always been a better ‘hands on' test taker than an MCQ one.
