This was my first test with Prometric for the CPA examination. They definitely don’t mess around with the whole check in process. I had to empty my pockets of my wallet and keys and put them in a locker. I then had to sign in, get my index fingers scanned, get a picture taken, had to show that my pockets were empty and then get scanned with a metal detector. Felt like I was at the airport!

On to the test. My first testlet was medium. The questions were definitely not as wordy as the ones that I had used to prepare through Wiley and Gleim. I marked about 3 to 4 questions at the end that I reviewed. Finished my testlet, took a break and came back for the moment of truth. Would my 2nd testlet be wordier and more difficult? Yes! Definitely could tell that my second testlet had much wordier questions. Oddly enough I saw more questions from my preparation on this testlet than the first testlet. Finally, moved onto my third testlet which I was pretty such was a harder testlet as well. I got a little nervous during the first couple of questions as I didn’t feel they were that hard. However, as I progressed through the testlet I felt that questions were a lot wordier than the first testlet.

Finally, took a quick bathroom break and moved onto the SIMS. These I was really nervous about after hearing all the recent stories. I know that I got 100% on these as I found the answers word for word in the authoritative literature. Don’t get tricked on these! If you search for them make sure that the section that you reference is answering almost verbatim as to what they are asking. Overall, the SIMS were pretty tricky however take advantage of the research ability. I found the answer to quite a few just by doing some diligent research. I know for a fact that out of the 7 SIMS that I got that I received 100% on 3 of them just through by taking the time to research.

Overall, I felt pretty good about the test. My preparation consisted of 12,000 MCQ (yes, I am not exaggerating). I went through the Wiley test bank 5 times, Gleim twice, Lambers Adaptive test prep once, cpareviewforfree twice and the minimum Yeager CRAM questions once. I did not prepare for the SIMS at all. I merely reviewed them in the Wiley test bank to gain a familiarity with them. I felt that this was sufficient as you really do not know what will be tested. I would say that I received about 15-20 multiple choice questions that were almost word for word questions that I had seen before due to my preparation. I only had a handful of questions that I had no clue on and had to guess (I’m hoping those were the pretest ones!). I also read through the Wiley book from time to time. I also utilized the Auditor’s report on Wikipedia as a quick reference. I purchased the Yeager CRAM and went through it only a little bit. I have found from experience that I learned best from MCQ as they lectures just weren’t doing it for me. I did end up utilizing the minimum questions from them though.

I felt that the best prep course the helped me the most was Wiley. I felt that the questions were more in line with what I saw on the exam. I read on this forum that the questions on the exam were actually somewhat easier than the Wiley questions and I would agree with that. I felt that the Gleim questions were just too wordy and much hardier than anything that I saw on the exam. Not to say that they aren’t a good tool. As I felt that by going through more questions it helped me absorb the material.

Anyway, this site has been a tremendous resource to me and am hoping by sharing my experience that this will help others. Hopefully I passed as otherwise I’m not sure what else to study next time around. On to BEC!

sounds to me like you pass even after taking a break after the first testlet lol…. and man i thought ii did alot of mcq's close to 5000… and thats with wiley 4x passmaster 2x cpaforfree about 3 times but anyways u noticed like i did that the more mcq you do the greater the chance for seeing some questions word for word…. i saw about 15-20 on mine too and whats remarkable is that some of those questions were the off the wall ones… when i saw them on the exam i was saying thank u jesus cause there is no way i could have answered it correct without seeing them before….. i also felt 100% about 4 of my sims

overall it sounds like u pass since u feel good abt the sims, thats really the make or break

congrats… i am here studying for bec now too

how long did you prepare for AUD? How many hours did you put in a week

    FAR 76
    REG 76(2x)
    BEC FAILED (2x)
    AUD FAILED (2x)

Thanks rknight21. I am really hoping that I pass. If I can just pass one of these tests I can use that confidence to tackle the rest.

My goal of doing as many MCQs as I did was that I would see identical questions on the test. I took the California Real Estate Broker's test before where this strategy worked. The way I looked at it was that there only so many questions out there that they could test you on. On the questions that weren't identical I felt that the AICPA had only changed around a couple of the words or just worded it differently but was still asking basically the same question. I also didn't want to mess around since this was my first test and wanted to start out strong.

@ gottagetmycpa – a total of 3 months. Don't freak out! The first month to me really did not count. I was still figuring out my study strategy. After trial and error and I figured out that doing MCQs was how I learn the best. Second I learned how to practice the MCQs. I started by doing sets of 100 only to find out that was not working. I found that sets of 20 in study mode work the best. This is the recommended amount by Gleim. Listen to him! I would typically do about 5 sets of 20 in the morning and another 5 sets of 20 in the evening after work. There were the killer days when I did 500 and there were also days when I had no time to do any.

Once I got my act together I would say the total time was about 6 weeks averaging 15 to 20 hours per week.

one more question. I have learned too that doing smaller mcq's are better so that I am not getting overwhelmed. For you are you doing 20 questions of random topics or each topic listed in the study mode ( I have wiley as well)

    FAR 76
    REG 76(2x)
    BEC FAILED (2x)
    AUD FAILED (2x)

I did mostly sets of 20 on all topics. During my last week and a half I started focusing on each particular topic and would do sets of 20 and sometimes sets of 30 just to see where my weaknesses were.

@ rknight21 – Yeah, everyone learns differently but we must be those individuals who learn best the repetitive MCQs. Before I decided to start with AUD first I first started with FAR. I purchased the Yeager HomeStudy program, went through all the lectures, took diligent notes, began taking the MCQs only to start getting like 25% on the tests!! I still feel it is a really good program geared towards people who learn best through videos and lots of notes. I however have learned that I don't learn the best that way hence the thousands and thousands of multiple choice questions. I still make sure to read through the material periodically and I also make sure why I know why each answers is right and wrong.

I feel your pain about work and school. I just finished my Masters in Business Administration this past June while working as well. Tried to fit studying in for the exam during that time as well but had to postpone the tests as it was too much.
