When you fail, you fail to try. I sincerely think that ALL of us on here that have been on the receiving end of NON-passing scores, have not failed. I respectfully asked the AICPA to reword their verbage when mailing notfications of scores from fail to not passed. What do you guys think??

    @ peanut, i agree with u 100%

Its like when my daughter was running in a race at her school for Sports Day and i ask her ” How much did u come in the race? Expecting her to say 1st, 2nd, 3rd…. she say 4th. So i calmly said to her “how much students were in the race with you? she replied 4 mom. So i said to her you came last in the race then. she said. No mom i came 4th.

It's so hard to think of this exam as pass/fail since it's truly not based on the % of correct answers. More like completed vs. still studying for it

The word is being used correctly, please don't read more into it than what it is.

    fail (fl)

    v. failed, fail·ing, fails

    1. To prove deficient or lacking; perform ineffectively or inadequately

    2. To be unsuccessful

    3. To receive an academic grade below the acceptable minimum.

Rather than changing a word used in it's proper context, perhaps you can treat failing with this mindset:

“I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” ~Thomas Edison

Um we never said the word was improperly used, we were just saying we don't like it.

    @Peanut.

Why because it's a four letter word that starts with F?

What don't you like about it? It's a word like blue, seven or jello.

It's the opposite of pass. fail = not passed.

If they mean the same exact thing why would you change it?

Maybe some people don't like, “not passed”. Seems a little wordy for me.

LOL. You might change your mind on the word if you get a letter saying “FAILED” at the top, followed by a terrible score report! Which is why I personally cringe at the word.

Why not just put the # grade and remove that PASS or FAIL altogether? Surely, everyone taking the exam knows that a 75+ is a passing score…. Or maybe not :/

Some, if not MOST, of the best things are learned through failure.

    Outright failure.

Yes it's uncomfortable, yes it is bothersome, yes it just plain sucks, but accountability is the name of the game not only in our industry, but in life in general. We did something that just *didn't work* so we have to reevaluate and reapply. Now, I think you folks are on to something regarding what the taboo the word, or what the concept has, in our society. It makes situations/people/CPA exams that have a “failed” status seem like they have 0 potential and are worthless. ON THE CONTRARY!

I failed BEC & probably REG too. I can't wait to start studying for it again with new-found knowledge. I will [eventually] succeed, as will you 🙂

Nothing wrong with the word failure. Dont try to sugar coat things to make yourself feel better, you're just setting yourself up for more heartache. See it for what it is and tackle it head on. It's like people calling themselves “big boned” or “husky” when they are clearly just overweight. If you keep telling yourself youre overweight, youll be more motivated to change your ways 🙂

On the surface I agree with dtomasello and goodluck2everyone because I get tired of all the politically correct euphemisms that are so often used these days. However, there is a pejorative connotation to the word fail that doesn't appear in the dictionary definition, and there is no point in discouraging people who are working hard on this exam. How about credit or no credit on the top of the report?
