Starting REG review, need some advice

    From what Ive read on here, a lot of people seem to think the exam focused a lot more on little details than on the core material focused on during the review. For those who have taken the exam, what would be your reccomendation? I usually do the Becker lectures, and then go back through and only review the highlighted material and do practice questions. Sounds like there is a lot more to learn than what is highlighted.

    Any ideas?

    pshistler, its really hard to say. There is no telling what you maybe asked on the exam. A few questions I was getting I was thinking to myself all the questions you could ask me about this topic that I know, you're asking me this?! It's truly a crap shoot. All I can say its trying to remember little nuances and different little numbers that while reading you may think is insignificant

    @pshustler,

    I used Becker, and I took REG on 2/28/11. I can tell you that you definitely need to know far more than is highlighted in Becker. My recommendation is that you read through the Becker book slowly as many times as possible. You won't retain most of it, but every little bit you do retain could help. Also, allow yourself at least 1 hour and 15 minutes for the sims, but preferably more. Don't panic when you see the sims. Know that they might be out-of-left field. Finally, consider supplementing Becker if you have time.

    I suspect I will need to retake REG despite having score in the 90s on my Becker homework. If I do, I will review my Becker materials again, but I will also supplement them with the Gleim book and practice questions.

    Good luck to you!

    Thanks for the feedback. I saved REG and FAR because I knew they would be harder for me. I didnt want to not get by on my first two and then get frustrated and give up.

    Any tips on keeping all the corporate tax exceptions straight? I think I'm okay with individual taxation, but the corporate taxation is boggling my mind. I have three weeks left and I'm not even through R3 yet. 🙁

    ToshaLackey: I'm right there with ya! Individual & property transactions are good, but corporations are VERY broad. I'm struggling with the basis & gain/loss calculations with them. I was thinking they were simiilar to partnerships, but the more questions I do…..the more I answer incorrectly. Very frustrating!!!!

    The freakin corporation taxation lecture is 2.5 hours. I dont have that much time to sit down at once with work and a newborn. By the time I wrap it up over a couple days, I forget what I have gone over and have to read it over again before I can go over the questions. Its ridiculous how much info is involved with REG

    pshustler, you are correct. I had the same issues. Takes time to get through the lectures. Again, make sure you focus on details, has hard as that may seem. Learning the nuances are just as important as learning the complex concepts. My test was all nuances.

    I dont think its that bad I went over it again and most of it made sense I have reread half the chapter and did half the questions “I can answer from reading half” and so far Im at 72% on the homework.

    My advice is to go over the ancillary material as if it were required. I just took REG as well and was very irritated by the way the material was presented as compared to the AICPA breakdown. A lot of the subjects that were weighted heavily was marked ancillary and I think they warranted more focus from Becker. I think the material I am referring to is in R4.
