Should I tell my boss? and how?

My current boss is OK, but he is not a CPA, and he does not know I passed the exam. I am afraid he might think I am leaving if he finds out, so I hesitate to let him know before I have a next good job in hand. Meanwhile I want to get my experience toward my license,so I am getting a 2nd job(part-time) at a local CPA firm where I have to work minimum 20 hours per week, which I need to let my boss know about. Should I tell him about the exam and my trying for my license? If not,how should I explain to him I must work min 20 hours per week for a part-time job? Thanks!

Cute screen name – it took me a couple of seconds to get it.

I'm a little confused – you're going to have to tell him that you need to start the part-time job for your experience, because you're going to be working a lot less, right? So why wouldn't you tell him that you took the CPA exams? If you don't tell him that you took the CPA exams, but you still have to tell him about working elsewhere part-time, what would you gain?

I am actually going to keep my current job and work parktime since my boss can't get me certified. So I will have to work 60 hrs a week total for 2 years, so not sure how that would work out.

    Sounds like you'll be busy!

So you have to tell your current boss that you're going to be cutting back hours and working somewhere else, part time?

Not cut back hours, but work longer hours each day, then I could get half day or a whole say off to work at the cpa firm.

why don't you just keep looking for a good/better job, why do you have to work part time?? I think you would have no life, be very busy, and easily get sick. you need to give yourself some rest.

I'm sorry, I don't know if it's the late nights catching up to me or something…If you're going to have to tell him that you'll be working part time somewhere else, why wouldn't you tell him that you passed the CPA exams?

    @Jeff

I first thought it was a phone number, but then counted the digits…

    Great scores!

If you can work the same at your current job and also take on an extra 20+ hours, then why not just tell your boss you need the extra $$ for ( )? If he asks why a CPA firm, just tell him you found it would work well as a part-time gig and that's all. As long as your current job's work doesn't suffer, I doubt your boss would care much. This assumes you believe he may fire you if you tell him about the CPA exams and all.

Well, I wish I could get a better job right after passed the exam, but the truth is it may not be that easy. And my state, scores only good for 8 years. Seems long time, but… So I thought, get a part job while I am waiting…

My current job is secured and I never work for a small cpa firm before, so not ready to jump to it(work full time) yet…

I agree with See Pee A.

Guess I'm too tired to articulate my thoughts properly 🙁

I say casually look for both a part time gig and a better full time gig. Remember, usually things work out different than your master plan, and quite often for the better!

I absolutely would tell him straight up and act like it's not a big deal. Say, “ok, so I passed the CPA exam, but in order to get my license I have to work for a CPA for two years, so I'm having to get a part time job at this little CPA firm and I wanted to make sure you're ok with it.” If he understands that it's a requirement for your license, he will be willing to give you more leeway than if it looks like you're just supplementing your income. He also may interpret it as a short term (2 year) thing at the end of which he will have you with the CPA designation and you'll quit the other job. He may also have suggestions of someone else in the company who can serve as your CPA mentor/certifier.

If you think him just knowing you're working elsewhere will prompt him to say, “why don't you just go ahead and work there full time. Clean out your desk.” then DON'T tell him and look for a full time job. Even if it takes you three or four months, you'll end up in a better position long term.

I think it'll be better if you just look for a full time job with a CPA firm.

I'm positive you'll find something before the 8 years expire 😉
