@eangle- I'm already in tax, so that was a thought. I'm working on my MBA with an accounting focus, but not due to finish until next Dec. I just studied for REG, so I'm thinking of a little more studying and going for EA in the interim.

shantiK1 — don't give up. you will get there. i'm mentally prepared for the fact that that may be my reality as well. either way, i'm planning to start a master's program in january, so i guess the question is just how fast i will want to get done with it. i started my very first accounting 101 class 2 years and 3 months ago, so the past couple years i have had literally no life 🙂 really hoping to be able to slow things down a little and won't have to spend the next 2 years rushing a master's degree. but, whatever happens, happens.

@ddrudd: Why not work at a CPA firm (if you are not already) who will pay for a masters and do your masters online over a longer period. So that way you can slow down 🙂 and not have to pay for it which is a plus!
I don't think there is any need to become certified right away. Yes it would be nice, but getting the exams passed is the main part to put behind us. The experience, ethics, and education requirements for the license can be done at our leisure.

@ddrudd- Too stubborn to give up! I went back for my accounting classes Spring of '10. Had a 1 year old and due on finals that term with my youngest. So, yes, life makes it hard. If it's not hard, it's not worth it, right?

@eangle- definitely have my 150. Just not ALL the specific accounting classes. I think I'm 10 units short. But who knows how the CBA will move things around.
As far as the EA, I can bust out some MCQs over the next couple weeks, take the tests, and get registered. It handles that question from potential clients: are you a CPA?

@ eangle – i do work for a CPA firm who will pay. problem is, they really want me to have my CPA license so i can sign returns. we are a 6-person firm and i have the responsibilities of a CPA without the license. we need to fix this 🙂
