    Hi there,

I am seeking advice from seasoned CPA test takers as I recently received my first score for a CPA exam section (REG) and unfortunately came up short with a 61. Prior to receiving my score, I began studying for FAR (about a week in) which I have been approved to take with my NTS. My original plan before receiving my score was to take FAR in early February, but am having second thoughts on starting a new section.

Of course, I wish to pass my first section as soon as possible and wonder if anyone has advice given the new updates to REG in 2019 and my lack of experience in determining an exam strategy. I have until April 25 to take FAR, and will risk forfeiting my NTS for FAR, if I retake REG instead.

Honestly, I am more motivated to retake REG since studying the new law will aid me during tax season and because I came fairly close to passing the section. However, I wonder if it is worth it to postpone FAR considering it will be my first Tax season as well (not sure if I’ll have time to study during..)?

    Thanks for any advice/input!

I'd retake REG and unfortunately forfeit the FAR NTS if need be. The information is still going to be fresh in your memory, and thats important. Even with the TCJA, business law remains the same and thats 1/5 of the exam IIRC.

How do you plan on studying for the REG re take? just pounding MCQ's or going over lectures/reading as well?

Thanks for the advice. I plan to do more MCQs this time as well as watch updated videos on topics such as QBI. I've read on other posts that it would be better to do a full study again of all topics, instead of focusing on only the weaker areas.

Do a full study. I gave myself 9 weeks for REG. It is a lot of information especially if you are on the audit side like me.

    FAR - 10/3/16
    BEC - 69 - 10/31/16
    AUD - November 2016
    REG - December 2016

To be honest, a 61 is not closing to passing. I got a 60 on my first take of FAR and I basically re-studied everything as though I was starting from scratch. I would leave REG alone and take FAR in February so you don't waste $100 and then take REG after tax season. Tax season really helped me pass REG.

Retake REG and yes, do a full study. Like Jeff always says, you're not 14 points away, you're 75 points away. Give it hell and you'll come out on top. Best of luck to you!
